Afternoon Roundup for 8/7 (Wainwright, Church, Matsui)

A few odds and ends for you:

  • Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (click here for the article) is reporting that the rehab assignment for Adam Wainwright “will be tailored for a relief pitcher — lower pitch counts, shorter and more frequent appearances”.  That means there’s at least a chance that the team opts to use him as a closer, at the least he’s going to be in the bullpen.  He is now set to pitch on Friday, as opposed to Saturday as originally planned.  This is a mixed bag for fantasy owners, since he is an ace when he’s healthy.  Still, he provides plenty of value as the closer, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
  • There is an increasing chance that Ryan Church may not return to the Mets this season, according to Roger Rubin & Andy Martino of The New York Daily News (click here for the article).  Church is expected to be looked at in the next day or two, after he “took batting practice with the team yesterday and fielded balls in the outfield”.  I wouldn’t drop him quite yet, but it’s getting close to that.  We should have some news in a few days.
  • Could Hideki Matsui still return this season?  It’s possible, as Mark Feinsand of The New York Daily News (click here for the article) is reporting that Matsui “took 37 swings of batting practice on the field at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa yesterday”.  He is expected to run today, but who knows when, and if, he will actually get back onto the field in ’08.
