Wow, it’s a slow Friday thus far. Here are a few minor odds and ends until some bigger news presents itself:
- “The worst thing we can do is heap expectations on Perez and anoint him the closer”, Tony La Russa was quoted as saying in an article by Derrick Goold from The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (click here for the article) regarding rookie reliever Chris Perez. He went on to say “Mostly because he’s not ready for it”. We’ll see how things develop, but there has been talk of Adam Wainwright returning to the closer’s role. Until that happens, Perez could pick up a few saves, but it appears he is not going to be annoited the full-time closer, at least not yet.
- According to Rob Biertempfel of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (click here for the article) Matt Capps is “on track to rejoin the Pirates by Sept. 1, if not sooner”. His next rehab appearance is set to take place at either Double A or Triple A. I’d think he’d slip right back into the closers role upon his return, so just hold onto him until he’s ready.
- Biertempfel also reports that Ronny Paulino is set to return to Triple A, after being on the DL thanks to an ankle injury. I’d think we’d see him again in the majors in September, but I wouldn’t expect much of an impact.
- Finally, Biertempfel is reporting that both Chris Duffy & Franquelis Osoria have cleared waivers and have been sent to Triple A.
