Renteria signs with Giants…or not
Update @ 6:00: Henry Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting the following (click here for the post):
“Talked to Bobby Evans, the Giants’ director of player personal, and he also said there is no deal, although he did confirm the team continues to talk to Renteria, Furcal and others.”
It’s odd that WFAN was reporting it, but there you have it. At this point, Renteria remains a free agent until further notice.
According to Sweeny Murti of WFAN in New York, the San Francisco Giants have signed Edgar Renteria to a 2 year, $18+ million contract. I’ll have more on the signing when I can get a little bit more information, but it seems that the Giants will be shifting Emmanuel Burriss over to 2B and Eugenio Velez to a role as a utility player.
Renteria is coming off a season where he hit .270 with 10 HR, 55 RBI, 69 R and 6 SB. Even with the change of scenery, he shouldn’t be considered anything more then a low-level fantasy option at this point, though he should provide some stability for younger players like Burriss to learn from.
