Waiver Worthy: Hot Players To Add For The Stretch Run

by Will Overton

There are 12 days left in the season, time to pull no punches. It’s time to go all out and win your league. Those streaking players you’ve been scared to add earlier this season…you have nothing to lose now, so go after them. If you have a guy you’ve been waiting on to heat up , or someone who is splitting time, don’t be afraid to cut bait any longer.

Whether you play in a head to head league and are entering a championship league or you’re in a roto league and are going back and forth over a few category points, it’s time to find who you need on the wire and make your move.

I’ve got several streaking waiver wire finds that could fit what you need. I’ll give you a brief rundown on each of them and also list what stats they can help you out in for those whose titles hang on one or two categories. Here we go:

Nate McLouth – OF, Baltimore Orioles: For a while now Nate McLouth has been hot, the last week or two he’s been scorching hot. In September McLouth is hitting .329, but in his last nine games he has six multiple hit games, including each of his last three games. Since taking over leadoff duties for the Orioles McLouth has done nothing but hit and score runs. McLouth has 10 runs in his last 10 games and five in his last three games. He’s an add in all formats right now.
Categories He Helps In: Runs, Some SB’s

Justin Smoak – 1B, Seattle Mariners: Stop me if you have heard this before, but Justin Smoak is heating up. Smoak has gone through these stretches before, and he always seems to flame out in a hurry. But I’m not recommending you adding Smoak for a few months, I’m talking about a couple weeks. Smoak has 10 hits in his last six games including a couple of HR’s. There are no guarantees with Smoak, but he seems to be back to playing every day now and he does have real power. He’s worth a deep league add at the least.
Categories He Helps In: HR, RBI

Darwin Barney – 2B, Chicago Cubs: There isn’t a whole lot of offense in the Cubs lineup, but Barney is a hitting machine right now. In his last ten games Barney is 15 – 35 at the plate including six multiple hit games, and four of them in his last five. Barney also has nine runs scored in these ten games. August was rough for Barney, but ever since the calendar turned to September Barney has done nothing but hit.
Categories He Helps In: AVG, Runs

Starling Marte – OF, Pittsburgh Pirates: Being on a hot streak isn’t all about the average. Producing in any category in a big way is worthy of being considered for an add. Marte is working hard to raise his average, 8 – 26 in his last six games. What Marte is really bringing to the table right now is stolen bases though. Marte has gotten five SB’s in his last seven games, including a couple of two steal games. He also has 6 R and 5 RBI in these seven games, so really he’s contributing across the board. Marte is a strong add right now for all formats.
Categories He Helps In: SB, R, Some RBI

Wilin Rosario – C, Colorado Rockies: It’s actually crazy to me that this guy is even available in as many leagues as he is right now considering how good he’s been. Rosario  is 12 – 35 in his last nine games with 2 HR’s and 7 RBI. Rosario has been a HR hitting machine with 25 HR’s on the season now and a HR/AB rate of 14.1. Rosario isn’t necessarily red hot in the power department, but there are few catchers out there with the kind of power this guy possesses and he can be a big pickup down the stretch if he’s still available.
Categories He Helps In: HR, RBI

Matt Dominguez – 3B, Houston Astros: Since coming up and joining the Astros Matt Dominguez has done nothing but hit. He’s managed to keep the K’s down and get on base at a surprisingly high rate. Currently he’s riding a six game hit streak and he’s flashed a bit of that power which he showed off so much in the minors with a couple of HR’s in the last ten games. He also has 8 RBI in the last ten games. The Astros aren’t the most proficient offense, but they still score runs and right now Dominguez is a big part of that.
