Fox Sports/Bleacher Report Mock Draft Results

Last night I participated in a Mock Draft which featured writers from and bloggers/writers from Bleacher Report.  It was an honor to be invited and had a great time.  The league was set up as your basic 5×5 and I had the 12th pick.  Normally, I hate that spot, but some how I managed to snag both Ryan Braun and Jimmy Rollins with my first two picks.

That was certainly a great (and surprising) start.  How’d the rest of the draft go?  Let’s take a look:

C – Mike Napoli (11)
C – Kelly Shoppach (17)
1B – Justin Morneau (3)
2B – Orlando Hudson (23)
SS – Jimmy Rollins (2)
3B – Garrett Atkins (7)
CI – Prince Fielder (4)
MI – Jhonny Peralta (10)
OF – Ryan Braun (1)
OF – Shane Victorino (5)
OF – Corey Hart (6)
OF – Hunter Pence (8)
OF – Andre Ethier (13)
U – Billy Butler (20)

P – Francisco Liriano (9)
P – Bobby Jenks (12)
P – Jonathan Broxton (14)
P – Josh Johnson (15)
P – Jered Weaver (16)
P – Frank Francisco (18)
P – John Maine (19)
P – Gil Meche (21)
P – Kenshin Kawakami (22)

I know, the rotation is shaky, but has the potential to have success.  Still, given the offensive bargains I was able to get, I just couldn’t pass them up.  Would you be comfortable heading into a season with this rotation?

The only other thing I want to mention is 2B, which I ended up waiting until the last round to grab.  I would’ve considered one of the top guys with my picks in Rounds 3 or 4, but the top five guys were all off the board already.  At that point, it just made sense to let the draft play out and see where things landed.

So, what do you think of the roster?  Would you have done anything differently?

  1. Sayid says:

Braun went 12th? What was the top 11?

  2. Rotoprofessor says:

I know, surprising, right? The first round went:

    1) Hanley Ramirez
    2) Jose Reyes
    3) David Wright
    4) Albert Pujols
    5) Matt Holliday
    6) Alex Rodriguez
    7) Miguel Cabrera
    8) Chase Utley
    9) Ryan Howard
    10) Grady Sizemore
    11) Josh Hamilton

  3. Ian says:

The owner drafting 5th can play in my league any time…

  4. Andrew says:

    what an outfield!

  5. big o says:

nice team , but i am wondering if you put off the pence pick , grabbed a SP in rd 8 , and picked up your outfielder @ 15/16 , what your team would look like .

  6. Rotoprofessor says:

Big O, the only SP that went in Round 8, when I took Pence, was Rich Harden (who I wasn’t going to take). In Round 9, the following guys got taken:

    Edinson Volquez
    Jon Lester
    Ryan Dempster
    Zack Greinke
    Joba Chamberlain

The two I would’ve seen taken was Greinke or Chamberlain, but they too have a lot of risk involved in them.

  7. Sayid says:

I suppose I could see Braun going after all those players. In a certain amount of minds. Interesting.

  8. Ryan says:

Awesome team. Your Offense is stacked and you’ll be able to compete in pitching.

  9. Rotoprofessor says:

Sayid, I agree, I guess I could see it, but Braun is a player that I covet going into drafts. I could see selecting him anywhere from #6 down, so the fact that he was there at #12 was shocking to me.

  10. C Bass says:

Eric you know i’m someone who loves to have great starting pitching. While your rotation has potential, it will more than likely be inconsistent. I realy don’t like going into the year with no rock solid starters. Liriano is an injury waiting to happen every year. I’m not loving it. Not a huge atkins fan. I think if you took a top notch starter in the 7th and took a later round 3B since the position is so deep I’d like your draft more. What SPs could you have gotten there?

  11. Just another reason why you have to take the term “expert” with a grain of salt. Matt Holliday 5th? Was Todd Farino in this league or that team’s personal advisor? Chase Utley 8th? Was I dreaming that he had off-season hip surgery? A-Rod drops to 6th?! Braun dropping to 11th and being passed up in favor of Josh Hamilton? Wow wow wow.

I sometimes question whether a fantasy baseball expert or writer has to actually demonstrate any fantasy baseball knowledge whatsoever to be invited into an expert league or actually get a job writing for a website. It’s clear that the answer is no, which is just baffling.

  12. Sayid says:

Getting Braun at 12 is a late Christmas present for sure. I mean, you can’t say much wrong about the guy. His OBP I guess. And if that back issue is going to be an issue. But his power really separates him from the pack. Few players have that power in the post-roid era.

I actually just traded for Braun in my H2H points league. I trade Utley and Holliday for him. They were both first round keepers whereas Braun is an 8th rounder. Now that’s even more value than you got but still, I think you got a steal.

  13. Guancous says:

I can’t believe Braun went 12th and Kinsler wasn’t even one of the players taken ahead of him.
