So, I’m in a bit of a quandry for my keeper league team. I know which way I’m leaning, but I’m curious as to what everyone else thinks.
Thanks to Scott Baker’s stint on the DL, I’m left with an open spot in my rotation. My choices are:
- David Purcey vs. Detroit
- Nick Adenhart vs. Oakland
- Micah Owings vs. Pittsburgh
My thoughts is Adenhart. He’s had an extremely strong spring and probably has the most upside of the group. I know upside means nothing to us, but talent is talent and sooner or later it is going to come through. Plus, Oakland is an extremely weak line-up, even with Matt Holliday in the middle.
Detroit’s offense worries me, and Purcey has struggled with his control a bit this spring. If Owings was on the road, I’d definitely start him, but at home I have reservations. Then again, he was lights out last April and with his strong spring could get off quickly once again.
So, what do you think? Which of these three would you start if it were you?

The key there is Owings vs. Pittsburgh… at Cincy even against the Pirates I’d worry. I do like Adenhart too, I’d definitely take a shot with him. Detroit has a solid offense, and with a young pitcher, I’d definitely stay away.
I think Micah is most likely to get a W.
The CBS Sports schedule now says that Adenhart will pitch the Angels 5th game, which means he will pitch at home against Boston instead of Oakland. This will make your decision easier.
Let me check that out now Dave! If that’s the case it is Owings all the way, but the schedule I saw had him going in Game #3.
Anyone else see anything?
Professor,
It’s Micah Owings all the way. Oakland’s lineup is better than it seems with Sweeney, Cabrera, Holliday, Giambi, and Chavez in the first 5 spots. I don’t think Pittsburgh’s lineup comes close.
Another thing to consider is run support and how Pittsburgh and Oakland’s starters will do against Cincy’s and LA’s lineups.
If it was my team, it would be Owings.
It looks like Dave was correct! The original report I read has been changed and Adenhart is scheduled to pitch game #5 against Boston. That obviously makes this a no-brainer, don’t you think!
