DL Decisions: Are Everth Cabrera Or Jacob deGrom Worth Holding?

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

At this late stage of the season, are players who hit the DL worth hanging onto? It obviously all depends on the injury and the format. Let’s take a look at a few of the recent DL stints to make a determination:

Everth Cabrera – San Diego Padres – Shortstop
This is quickly becoming a lost season for Cabrera, who is back on the DL with a hamstring injury. He was recently out with a similar injury, missing July 1-28. That’s four weeks of action and you have to wonder if the Padres will play it even more cautious this time around.

Even if he misses the same four weeks, that puts him back on the field in mid-September. Considering he was hitting .232 with 18 SB in 357 AB, even if that were the case it’s hard to expect him making much of an impact.

While he showed he can still run with 5 SB since returning from the DL, he’s too difficult to trust right now. Outside of certain keeper leagues, move on if you need the roster spot.

Jacob deGrom – New York Mets – Starting Pitcher
Any time a pitcher has problems with his shoulder there’s a bit of a red flag. However we have to remember that he was going to face an innings limit eventually, so it makes sense for the Mets to be extremely cautious with him right now. If he was going to get time off now or at the end of the season, you might as well use this as an excuse to shut him down now.

There’s no question that there is an issue, but it doesn’t appear to be a long-term concern. With the way he’s pitched this season, with a 2.87 ERA and 1.23 WHIP, he obviously is a pitcher to keep stashed away for now.

While the Mets are going to be cautious, he is going to pitch again before long.  Early word is that he could miss just these next two starts, though that remains to be seen.

What about Tanaka and Wacha? Both have been mentioned coming back in mid September. But with their unique injuries, is it worth holding on to them? Or picking them off the waiver wire?

    • Rotoprofessor says:

It really depends on situation. From what I’ve read it appears Wacha is closer and could make a bigger impact, especially with the Cardinals still in the race. If the Yankees fallout, would it be a surprise to see Tanaka simply shut down?
