Stat of the Day: Danny Santana’s BABIP: Is It Repeatable?

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

Did You Know:
There were two players with at least 350 PA in 2014 who posted a BABIP of .400+:

  • Danny Santana – .405
  • Drew Stubbs – .404

Since 2000 only three other players with at least 350 PA in a season who posted a BABIP of .400+

  • Manny Ramirez (2000) – .403
  • Jose Hernandez (2002) – .404
  • Joey Votto (2012) – .404

Thoughts:
No one is going to make the mistake of overvaluing Stubbs, who is a part-time player and not guaranteed AB.  Santana, however, is a different story.

We took an in-depth look at him in January (click here to view), and this is just further proof that his 2014 success was buoyed by a lot of luck.  Make sure not to overdraft him as there is a much better chance that he disappoints as opposed to coming reasonably close to living up to expectations many have for him.
