Three “Cheap” DFS Options for May 13: Yunel Escobar & More

by Ray Kuhn

By this point, we know there are many ways to build a successful DFS lineup. Some of those skills also directly translate to success in your season long leagues. The players listed below are options you should be aware of. This is either to fill out the remainder of your lineup tonight, or as options to potentially target on your waiver wire.

Let’s take a look at some of those options now. Also, keep in mind that you should always be aware of weather and lineup situations. Additionally, there is action beginning in the late afternoon on the east coast today which could dictate the contests you enter.

1) Jason Hammel – SP – Chicago Cubs
Knowing who the top pitchers are on any given night is the easy part. Of course you still have to select the right one, but the best options do stand out. On two pitcher sites generally the first thing I do, is scroll to the bottom of the pitcher list. Tonight Hammel stands out to me. He is facing the Mets whose offense leaves a lot to be desired, so he meets the first requirement. The weather has been chilly in Chicago, and another night game should help to limit the offense. But more importantly, Hammel has been having success this season. In six starts, he is 3-1 with a 3.52 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 38.1 innings. Sign me up for that as my SP2.

2) Yunel Escobar – 2B – Washington Nationals
Lately, all Escobar has been doing is hit. He is generally at the top of the order, and his playing is secure. On Monday, Escobar went 5-5 for the second time this season, and entering action on Tuesday he is hitting .342 with two home runs, 11 RBI’s and 16 runs scored. That is good for 2.83 points per game, and while I wouldn’t expect a power outburst or another five hit game, you can bank on solid production for the price.

3) Marlon Byrd – OF – Cincinnati Reds
There is no way to sugarcoat the rough start to 2015 Byrd had. About a week and a half ago, his batting average was sitting at .163. Byrd has since brought his average up to .213 (entering Tuesday’s game) and has averaged 6.0 points per game in his last eight games. The outfielder still can be trusted as a power source with six home runs and 17 RBI’s and tonight he also gets to waste a weak lefty in Eric Stults.
