Three “Cheap” DFS Options for May 21: Steve Pearce & More

by Ray Kuhn

From just about all perspectives today is a good day. We have a mixed slate of games and that means there is baseball just about all day long. It also means you have to be careful when deciding which DFS game to play and its format. Let’s take a look at three players who could help save you some money.

1) Brandon Barnes – OF – Colorado Rockies
With Corey Dickerson sidelined, this spot was all set to go to Drew Stubbs. However Stubbs and his .118 average were sent to Triple-A so it appears that Barnes will be on the receiving end of the available playing time. The game is in Coors Field and Jerome Williams is pitching for the Phillies, so there are two positives in Barnes’ corner. While he only has one major league at bat, Barnes hasn’t exactly been tearing it up in Triple-A either hitting .205 with 5 HR and 12 RBI. I know that is not a ringing endorsement, but the value and opportunity are there. If Barnes isn’t in the lineup then replace him with Rafael Ynoa (.263 in 38 at bats) if possible.
Fantasy Score Price: $2,100

2) Odrisamer Despaigne – SP – San Diego Padres
Talking about Despaigne is a commitment because making sure you spell his name right is not an easy feat. After kicking the season off with three strong starts he has struggled in his last three outings allowing 19 runs in just 9.2 innings. If I am looking for a cheap second pitcher today, he is the one I like as he takes the mound at home against the Cubs who can be limited offensively. With only 12 strikeouts in 29.1 innings there isn’t much upside here, but the price is right and he does have the chance for a win. In his two successful starts earlier this season the right-hander put up 13 and 13.66 points. which is what we are looking for today.
Fantasy Score Price: $3,300

3) Steve Pearce – 2B – Baltimore Orioles
If nothing else, let this serve as your notice that Pearce is now eligible at second base on Fantasy Score. You still have to check the lineup to make sure that he is in it, but with a weak crop at second base after the elite options this can be used to your advantage. Baltimore faces another left-hander today in J.A. Happ so I do like Pearce’s chances. On the season he is hitting just .193 with three home runs and 11 RBI, but he does have two hits in two of his last four games and did hit .293 with 21 home runs last season.
Fantasy Score Price: $3,000
