Players of the Week: June 1-7

Hitter of the Week:
It is a shocker this week, but the Rockies Ian Stewart takes home the award with a fantastic week.  He hit .480 (12-25) with 4 HR, 12 RBI and 9 R.  That line was enough to lead the league in HR, RBI and R.  While the lead in HR (there were eight players with three) and R (Prince Fielder & Hunter Pence each had eight) was marginal, he blew out the field in RBI.  No other player broke double-digits, with three players picking up nine.  Throw in the average and it turned into a no-brainer.  The real question in Colorado now is how much longer will they put up with a slumping Garrett Atkins?

Runner’s Up:

  • Prince Fielder – Milwaukee Brewers – .462 (12-26), 3 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R, 0 SB
  • Matt Holliday – Oakland Athletics – .417 (10-24), 2 HR, 9 RBI, 7 R, 0 SB
  • Hunter Pence – Houston Astros – .346 (9-26), 2 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R, 1 SB

Pitcher of the Week:
After having a win ripped from his fingers last week, there was little doubt that Roy Halladay was going to step up this week.  Not only did he win both of his starts, but he went the distance in both of them racking up some impressive numbers.  He went 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA and 0.83 WHIP over his 18 innings of work.  Not only that, but he had 20 strikeouts, by far the most in the league (Gavin Floyd was second with 15).  Entering the week he would’ve been a safe bet to take home this award and he certainly did not disappoint.

Runner’s Up:

  • Jonathan Broxton – Los Angeles Dodgers – 4.0 IP, 1 W, 2 SV, 0.00 ERA, 0.25 WHIP, 8 K
  • Vin Mazzaro – Oakland Athletics – 13.2 IP, 2 W, 0.00 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 5 K
  • Jeff Niemann – Tampa Bay Rays – 9.0 IP, 1 W, 0.00 ERA, 0.33 WHIP, 9 K
  • Jon Lester – Boston Red Sox – 9.0 IP, 1 W, 1.00 ERA, 0.44 WHIP, 11 K

What does everyone else think?  If not these players, who do you think deserved the awards?

  2. Chad says:

Almost picked up Stewart in one league when Asdrubal Cabrera went to the DL but picked up someone who put up a fraction of the numbers instead. DOH!!!!

  3. Jimmy says:

I like these choices, too. Good job.
