Afternoon Roundup (Mets sign reliever and more)
A few little odds and ends for everyone:
- According to Mike Rose of New York Newsday (click here for the post), the Mets have signed former Tampa Bay Rays closer Al Reyes to a minor league contract. He will start in Triple A, but I would be shocked if he’s there long. This certainly seems like a low risk, high reward signing for the Mets, who are desparate for someone to stabilize the backend of their bullpen. Not that Reyes is a lights out type closer, but he has proven that he can handle the role with 26 saves last season. He certainly isn’t a guarantee to get the job in September, but if you have an extremely deep bench and are in need of saves, he’s worth a flyer.
- John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer (click here for the post) is reporting that the Reds have put Jerry Hairston Jr. back on the DL, bringing up Adam Rosales to take his spot on the rotation. It’s a shame, because Hairston was emerging as a very useful option in deeper leagues.
- Fay also notes that David Ross was officially released.
- Sean Gallagher is expected to miss one, if not two, starts due to a “tired right arm”, according to Sussan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle (click here for the post). With Justin Duchscherer also expected to miss a start, Slusser says that Dana Eveland, Kirk Saarloos and Dan Meyer are the favorites to fill the voids. I wouldn’t recommend grabbing any of them until they prove worthy.
- The Miami Herald (click here for the article) is reporting that Jose Castillo was claimed on waivers by the Astros. He had been hitting .244 with the Giants and should be ignored in all formats.
