Morning Roundup (Buchholz, Snell, Upton and more)

Not a lot going on, but here are a few news and notes to kick off your morning:

  • The Boston Red Sox have sent Clay Buchholz down to Double A, according to Joe McDonald of The Providence Journal (click here for the article).  I can’t say that this is a very surprising move.  As I said in the Around the Majors, I would not give up on him in keeper leagues, as he has the potential to bounce back and have a tremendous season, but 2008 has obviously been a lose for him.
  • In a separate article (click here) notes that Julio Lugo “suffered a setback in his rehab yesterday when he aggravated his torn quadriceps while running in the outfield at Oriole Park at Camden Yards”.  That should mean Jed Lowrie will continue to get the AB’s at SS for the Red Sox.
  • According to John Grupp of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (click here for the article), Ian Snell’s recent resurgence is due to a “change is Snell’s delivery, in which his hands are going more above his head in his wind-up”.  Given the way he pitched early on, I’m not going to say that he is a great option the rest of the way, but I was very high on Snell heading into the season and think he certainly could be useful the rest of the way.  He has the potential to really help in K’s, so if you are in need in deeper formats, you may want to consider giving him a second (or third, or fourth) chance, at least on your bench.
  • What will the Diamondbacks do when Justin Upton is ready to return?  According to Kyle Odegard of The East Valley Tribune (click here for the article), Mark Reynolds was taken balls at 2B yesterday.  If that were to happen, Chad Tracy would move across to 3B and Adam Dunn to 1B, allowing Upton to slide back into the OF.  That certainly would be the most offense the Diamondbacks could have, but I’m not sure how good defensively they would be.  It’s certainly worth noting, but time will tell if they actually move forward with this plan.
  • Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (click here for the article) is reporting that Jason Isringhausen is aiming to return to the mound next season.  I doubt it would be as a closer, given the fact that he had lost the job this season, but just don’t forget about him next season.  There’s always the chance that he returns to the role, though it’s probably a long-shot.
  • According to The Miami Herald (click here for the article), the Cardinals will have Adam Wainwright back in the rotation tomorrow night.  They say he may still shift to the bullpen, but Wainwright is a potential ace.  Given how long he’s been out for, I’d probably leave him on the bench for his first start, but then wouldn’t hesitate to re-insert him into your line-up.
  • Mitch Maier of the Royals is going on the DL with “three broken bones on the right side of his face after being hit with a pitch”, according to Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star (click here for the article).  Joey Gathright is expected to take his spot on the roster.
