by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

As we mentioned when we updated our Top 20 outfielders (click here to view), the Brewers having not yet traded either Ryan Braun or Domingo Santana has to have an impact on our rankings.  While we didn’t see that in #1-20, we will in the next twenty.  Let’s take a look at how far both of them fall, as well as all of the rest of the changes to our rankings:

Thoughts:

  • While the Brewers utilizing Ryan Braun at first base would help to get both he and Santana into the lineup, it’s hard to imagine him playing there every day. That’s going to lead to fewer AB for both players and sends them spiraling down the rankings.  Obviously it’s not too late for a trade, and that would help, but until it happens you need to be cautious with both.
  • Maybe you view Nomar Mazara as having disappointed in 2017, despite hitting 20 HR with 101 RBI, and there are some risks heading into 2018 (most notably in his average). However the potential is there for growth in his power, as well as development in his approach with experience.  To see our in-depth thoughts on him, click here.
  • Surprised to see Mitch Haniger ranked this high? To find out what we are expecting from him in 2018, click here.
  • At this point we have to be cautious with Miguel Sano, especially as we wait to hear if there is fallout from his off-the-field issues (he could face a suspension). That said there’s also a big risk in his average, as he struggles with strikeouts (35.8% in ’17) and benefited from a lot of luck (.375).  Keep that in mind before overvaluing him.
  • Delino Deshields Jr. has officially been named the starting centerfielder and leadoff hitter for the Rangers. While he may not blow you away, he brings significant upside in the SB department and that’s not something that’s easy to find right now.
