Afternoon Roundup (Church, Pirates moves, Kearns and more)

A few newsbits for this afternoon:

  • According to Mike Rose of New York Newsday (click here for the post) Ryan Church has come off the DL and is in the line-up, playing RF.  Robinson Cancel was sent to Triple A to make roster space.  Church was enjoying a breakout season prior to suffering a concussion and certainly should be seen as an option in all deeper formats immediately.  If he picks up where he left off, he could again become useful in all formats soon enough.
  • Rob Biertempfel of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (click here for the post) is reporting that it was Steve Pearce who was sent to Triple A to make room for Doug Mientkiewicz.  Nyjer Morgan had to stay around, while “Nate McLouth still is out with a nasty stomach ailment”.  It turns out that Matt Capps and Tom Gorzelanny will not be brought back until tomorrow, when two more players will have to be sent down.
  • Austin Kearns was out of the Nationals line-up due to “some residual soreness” in his elbow, according to Chico Harlan of The Washington Post (click here for the post).  It stems from surgery he has in May.  Manager Manny Acta said that “We’re just going to have to monitor him, because he won’t say anything and he’ll play through pain. We appreciate all that, but we know the day after a night game sometimes he takes a little bit longer to get it going, because of the recovery time”.  That’s certainly worth keeping in mind.
  • In a separate article (click here), Harlan posted an announcement from Jim Bowden regarding Dmitri Young, which says “Dmitri Young has been cleared medically to continue baseball activities. He is scheduled to report to Melbourne, Florida, on Saturday evening to get into baseball shape. His diabetes is under control. We are hopeful that he will be able to contribute to the Nationals major league team in September”.  It’s a great story, but I wouldn’t touch him for my fantasy team at this point.
