Updated 2018 Preseason Rankings: Top 40 Starting Pitchers (#1-20): The Fallout From Madison Bumgarner’s Injury

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

Obviously the loss of Madison Bumgarner is a crippling one for the San Francisco Giants and for fantasy owners who have already drafted…  Or is it?  Early word is that he’ll miss 6-8 weeks due to the broken bone in his pinkie, but even if it stretches to 10 weeks couldn’t you argue that 3.5 months of Bumgarner is better than most alternatives?  With that in mind, let’s kick off our updated Top 40 starting pitcher rankings with #1-20:

2. Max Scherzer – Washington Nationals
3. Corey Kluber – Cleveland Indians
4. Chris Sale – Boston Red Sox

6. Noah Syndergaard – New York Mets
7. Luis Severino – New York Yankees
8. Jacob deGrom – New York Mets
9. Stephen Strasburg – Washington Nationals
10. Aaron Nola – Philadelphia Phillies
11. Carlos Martinez – St. Louis Cardinals

Thoughts:

  • The removal of Madison Bumgarner pushes Aaron Nola into the Top 10. That may be a tough sell for many, but we’ve already discussed him as having that type of upside (click here for the article).  You won’t have to pay this price, but be prepared to reap the benefits.
  • We’ve cautioned about not overvaluing Verlander based on his late season performance, and that remains despite him being among the Top 20 options. Remember he’s moving to a less favorable ballpark and did own a 4.16 ERA on the road last season.
  • Will this be the season that Carlos Martinez takes that next step forward and emerges as one of the elite? We recently offered our 2018 projection, so make sure to check that out by clicking here.

    Looking for some perspective.
I have Kershaw and I’m wondering if now is the time to sell high. Would you do a Kershaw for severino and acuna daal?

Also I just traded goldy and 3 (top 100 prospects all outside the top 10) for Freeman and and Vlad Jr. thoughts?

    • Rotoprofessor says:

No I would t make that Kershaw deal. Including Severino doesn’t make it a sell high by any stretch

As for theotberdeal, hard to say without knowing the names

  2. Todd says:

You have Darvish and Lester in the top 20 for Cubs pitchers. Do you still feel that way, or would you put Quintana and Hendricks above them?

    • Rotoprofessor says:

I could understand making the argument, but I still like the upside of Lester and Darvish (LEster would def. be ahead of them still, Darvish is the more debatable one)
