Morning Roundup (Cueto, Lyon and more)

Here’s some news and notes from last night and this morning to kick off your day:

  • Johnny Cueto is expected to miss one start with a strained elbow, according to John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer (click here for the post).  That’s good news, but slide him to your bench at this point.  It’s very possible that 1 start becomes 2 and a trip to the DL ultimately comes, especially with a young pitcher who they are going to be cautious with.
  • According to Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin, Brandon Lyon will remain the team’s closer, despite his recent struggles, according to an article from Jerry Brown of The East Valley Tribune (click here for the article).  That’s good news for owners, but it is possible that the team ultimately makes a change if he continues to pitch poorly.  With Jon Rauch struggling as well, Chad Qualls or Tony Pena would probably get the chance to close out games if a change is needed.
  • Joe McDonald of The Providence Journal (click here for the article) gives updates on all the injured Red Sox:
    • Both Julio Lugo and David Aardsma “have been cleared to resume their rehab with trainer Scott Waugh”.  There’s no word on how long it will be until they return.
    • Mike Lowell will be rejoining the team today, though not to be activated.  “He had been rehabbing at his home in Miami” from an oblique strain.
    • J.D. Drew still could end up on the DL, though there is yet to be any word.
  • According to Ryan Divish of The News Tribune (click here for the article), the Mariners sent Mark Lowe to Triple A, recalling Randy Messenger.  There’s no real fantasy value with either player.
