2010 Dynasty Rankings: Top 15 Third Baseman: A First Look

There are some fairly significant changes between our yearly league rankings and our dynasty rankings, in part due to some tremendous young talent like Pablo Sandoval & Gordon Beckham.  Let’s take a look how things stack up initially:

  1. Alex Rodriguez - New York Yankees
  2. Evan Longoria - Tampa Bay Rays
  3. David Wright - New York Mets
  4. Ryan Zimmerman - Washington Nationals
  5. Mark Reynolds - Arizona Diamondbacks
  6. Pablo Sandoval - San Francisco Giants
  7. Kevin Youkilis - Boston Red Sox
  8. Aramis Ramirez - Chicago Cubs
  9. Gordon Beckham - Chicago White Sox
  10. Chone Figgins - Los Angeles Angels
  11. Michael Young - Texas Rangers
  12. Ian Stewart - Colorado Rockies
  13. Mark DeRosa - St. Louis Cardinals
  14. Kevin Kouzmanoff - San Diego Padres
  15. Jorge Cantu - Florida Marlins
Thoughts:
  • The fear of Reynolds average struggling mightily, which is very realistic considering the number of times he strikes out, as well as a regression in the speed department knocks him down a few spots for dynasty league owners. His value may never be higher than it is right now, so selling him is a very realistic option. I’ll talk much more about him in the coming weeks, but it’s very possible he’s going to fall in the yearly league rankings as well.
  • With his talent and age, Sandoval jumps over Youkilis for dynasty league owners. For 2010, however, I’m not sure he’s going to outperform him.
  • Where do you rank Gordon Beckham in a dynasty league? For now I’m only moving him up one spot, but that is likely to change as more projections are done for the 2010 season. Let me ask you, who would you pick if you had the choice, Ramirez, Beckham or Figgins?
  • Will Stewart be able to hit for a decent average? That is going to ultimately determine his 2010 potential, but his long-term upside gets him ranked higher than a few other players here.
  • DeRosa’s value could increase depending on where he ends up. We’ll monitor that as we move forward.
  • I have my doubts about Cantu, but 195 RBI over the past two seasons certainly is convincing.

Where is Chipper Jones you ask?  You have to wonder how many more years he has left, dropping him down the rankings for dynasty owners.

What are your thoughts on these rankings?  Who should be higher?  Who should be lower?

  1. I’m surprised to see you rank Kouzmanhoff so high. What do you like about him? I would like to see him get traded.

  2. Matt, I do see promise in Kouzmanoff, especially if he’s traded. Granted, I could see reducing him a few notches as more research is done, but you have a player who has the potential to hit .270 (he had a below average BABIP of .289).

He has proven the ability to hit between 18-24 HR in a season, has had 30+ doubles in each of the past three seasons and had 88 RBI for a poor offensive team in 2009.

Basically, I see the upside there, but we’ll take a much closer look at him in the coming weeks.

  3. No way Zimmerman is near Reynolds, nevermind ahead of Reynolds. Reynolds is a 40 HR guy. I’ll take a .250 average for that any day.

  4. Keith, needless to say I’m not as sold on Reynolds power as some are, but that’s an article I’m working on now. I expect to have it up in the next few weeks, so let’s save the argument on him for another day.

  5. Keith, you would rather have Reynolds over Zimmerman? That’s just crazy. .250average-.330 OBP is not good, not good at all. Not to mention he has the most empty 40 homeruns I have ever seen.
