Evening Roundup (Chamberlain, Gregg out, Kent and more)
A few notes before you get to sleep on this holiday weekend:
- Despite saying he was ready to return, Yankees manager said “that it will be best to wait until tomorrow to see how Chamberlain feels” according to Mark Herman of New York Newsday (click here for the post). As Herman points out, it seems apparent that upon his return (he threw 35 pitches off the mound today), it is going to be in the pen.
- According to Juan C. Rodriguez of The Sun Sentinel (click here for the post), “The Marlins have shut down struggling closer Kevin Gregg due to a balky left knee”. He says that Matt Lindstrom and Arthur Rhodes could see time as the closer, depending on the situation. I would take the flyer on Lindstrom if it were me if you are in need of saves.
- Tony Jackson of The Los Angeles Daily News (click here for the post) is reporting that Jeff Kent’s career come to an end. Instead of paraphrasing, let me quote his entire opening paragraph: “This isn’t necessarily a career-ending injury, but given that he probably was going to retire anyway, given that he has been playing with this degenerative tear in the cartilage of his left knee for about a month knowing all the while it could tear more severely at any time (and probably would, eventually, and that appears to be exactly what happened), and given that this is a wear-and-tear injury that is fairly normal for a 40-year-old guy trying to play baseball on an everyday basis for six months, it seems unlikely that he’ll return.” As Jackson says later on in the post, it’s possible an MRI shows no further damage, though it may not be likely. He also says that Kent has yet to announce that this is his last season. Blake DeWitt is expected to see time at 2B in his absence.
- According to tsn.ca (click here for the article) the Phillies have released Kris Benson, who never managed to join the major league club this season.
- Shannon Russell of The Cincinnati Enquirer (click here for the post) is reporting that Adam Rosales was sent to Triple A to make room for Ramon Ramirez, who started for the Reds tonight. No big news here.
- The Miami Herald (click here for the article) is reporting that the Orioles sent Radhames Liz to Triple A, with Oscar Salazar coming up to join the team.
