Morning Roundup (Kinsler, September call-ups, Maholm & more)

A few notes for everyone:

  • The Star-Telegram (click here for the article) is reporting that Ian Kinsler has “hit a plateau” while recovering from a sports hernia and won’t be back sooner then August 9.  With that said, all you can do is leave him on your bench and wait.  It sounds like he’s going to be back, which certainly is better news then what was originally thought, so stay patient.
  • The Star-Telegram is also reporting that the Rangers may skip Scott Feldman’s next start.  No big loss anyways.  They also note that “Kevin Millwood will stay on his regular rest and start Friday”.
  • The Pirates are adding Ross Ohlendorf to their rotation, going with a 6-man rotation, according to Rob Biertempfel of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (click here for the article).  In regards to the team’s ace, Paul Maholm, “manager John Russell was careful to map out a plan that keeps left-hander Paul Maholm more or less on his normal routine”.  We’ll just have to see how it plays out.
  • Yorvit Torrealba has finally been placed on the DL by the Rockies, according to Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post (click here for the article), with a torn left meniscus.  Adam Melhouse will take his roster spot, but there’s no real value either way.
  • Todd Helton “took batting practice on the field Saturday for the first time since landing on the disabled list”, according to Renck, seen as a good sign in his progress.  Just keep waiting on him if he’s stashed on your bench, but I wouldn’t go picking him up since it’s unknown when he may return still.
  • Tony Jackson of The Los Angeles Daily News (click here for the post) is reporting that Jason Schmidt will not rejoin the Dodgers this season.  He had little value in begin with, but obviously he has none now.
  • The team is expecting to recall the following players, according to Jackson, as September call-ups: Andruw Jones (who is said to still be suffering from problems with his leg), Scott Proctor, Chin-Lung Hu, A.J. Ellis, Delwyn Young, James McDonald, Eric Stults and Clayton Kershaw.  Kershaw is probably the only one that may bring fantasy value.
  • The Miami Herald (click here for the article) is reporting that the Twins will recall the following players as September call-ups: Phillip Humber (P), Bobby Korecky (P), Matt Macri (IF), Matt Tolbert (IF), Jason Pridie (OF) and Ryan Jorgensen (C).  No one that will have any realy fantasy value, except maybe Humber if he gets a chance to start, but I don’t see that happening.
  • Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Dispatch (click here for the article), says “Tony La Russa said he harbors concern about the lingering abdominal strain that has limited Rick Ankiel’s availability, kept him out of center field and quite possibly complicated his swing”.  It’s certainly worth monitoring.
  • According to Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle (click here for the post) the A’s have placed Frank Thomas on the DL, while also sending Dan Meyer to Triple A.  These moves allowed Aaron Cunningham and Keith Foulke to join the roster.  In the minor leagues this season Cunningham was hitting .329 with 17 HR, 66 RBi, 86 R and 15 SB.  If he gets regular AB’s, which I think he will, he will be worth using in all leagues that require 5 OF’ers.
