Morning Roundup (More callup news, Kent & more)
A few more notes for everyone:
- The Phillies are recalling 4 players for September callups, including two of their top prospects, according to Todd Zolecki of The Philadelphia Enquirer (click here for the article). I wouldn’t pick either of them up, as I don’t expect either of them to play very much, but it’ll be interesting to see how they perform. The players are:
- J.A. Happ (P)
- Adam Eaton (P)
- Lou Marson (C) - He could see more time, given the fact that neither catcher the Phillies are currently using, Chris Coste & Carlos Ruiz, are big-time options.
- Greg Golson (OF) - Zolecki says he’ll be used more as a “defensive replacement and as a pinch-runner”.
- According to Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News (click here for the post), the Rangers will initially recall just two players, Taylor Teagarden (C) and German Duran (INF). The Rangers may want to see what they have with these two, so it’ll be interesting to see how they use them. Keep your eyes on it.
- There’s no official word yet from The Kansas City Royals as to exactly who will be recalled as part of the September callups, according to Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star (click here for the article), except for Jimmy Gobble and John Bale, who were activated from their rehab assignments. Ryan Shealy (1B), Matt Tupman (C), Neal Musser (P) and Josh Newman (P) are also potential recalls. Kila Kaaihue, who we have talked about here, is another potential recall, though the team has not yet decided. If he is among the players promoted and he sees regular AB’s, he has the potential to be an impact player down the stretch, so we’ll keep our eyes on that one.
- In the same article, Dutton updates us on the conditions of Mike Aviles and Mark Grudzielanek. Aviles, hit in the finger by a pitch, had x-rays, which were negative. It is possible he returns on Tuesday. Mark Grudzielanek, meanwhile, had an MRI that “all but ruled out a return to action in the season’s closing days”. Apparently, it appears he needs another few weeks to return from a torn deltoid ligament, so move on in all formats if you were waiting on him.
- According to Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times (click here for the article), Jeff Kent is suffering from a “torn medial meniscus”, which requires surgery. His season could over and as we’ve talked about, so may his career. The article says “If the damage is limited to what was discovered in the MRI exam, Kent should be able to immediately start a rehabilitation program that could be completed in two weeks”, but obviously it could also be worse then that. We should know more soon enough.
- The Miami Herald (click here for the article) is reporting that Adam Jones will be coming off the DL today, along with pitchers Garrett Olson and Jim Miller coming up. Jones had emerged as a solid option prior to getting injured and should immediately step back into the starting line-up.
- Jeff Wilson of The Star-Telegram (click here for the article) is reporting that Nelson Cruz will remain in the line-up. That’s certainly good news for owners who should be using him in deeper formats and having him stashed away in other formats.
- According to Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (click here for the article), the only callup that the Cardinals will make today is Randy Flores. Other players who could be recalled include Brendan Ryan and Jason Motte, but those are not expected to come until tomorrow.
- In a separate post (click here), it is confirmed that Chris Carpenter will be a reliver upon his return, which could come on Tuesday. That makes him a lot less valuable to fantasy owners.
- Tom Krasovic of The San Diego Union-Tribune (click here for the article) is reporting that the Padres are releasing Taduhito Iguchi and Brett Tomko, allowing the team to recall Matt Antonelli and Wade LeBlanc.
