Top 15 Dynasty League 2B For 2010: Take Two

Let’s continue updating our Dynasty League Rankings, looking at the top second baseman available for 2010:

  1. Chase Utley - Philadelphia Phillies
  2. Ian Kinsler - Texas Rangers
  3. Brandon Phillips - Cincinnati Reds
  4. Dustin Pedroia - Boston Red Sox
  5. Robinson Cano - New York Yankees
  6. Ben Zobrist - Tampa Bay Rays
  7. Aaron Hill - Toronto Blue Jays
  8. Brian Roberts - Baltimore Orioles
  9. Howie Kendrick - Los Angeles Angels
  10. Jose Lopez - Seattle Mariners
  11. Dan Uggla - Florida Marlins
  12. Ian Stewart - Colorado Rockies
  13. Scott Sizemore - Detroit Tigers
  14. Clint Barmes - Colorado Rockies
  15. Rickie Weeks - Milwaukee Brewers

Thoughts:

  • Considering the age of many of the top second baseman, there is no difference between the rankings for dynasty leagues and yearly leagues at the top of these rankings.  Of the top seven, only Chase Utley will be over 28-years old on April 1.  Is anyone going to downgrade him because of his age?  I don’t think so.
  • Is Howie Kendrick ever going to fully realize his potential?  Who knows, but keeper league owners definitely should consider taking the flyer on him.  He certainly has more long-term potential than someone like Dan Uggla or Ian Stewart.
  • Placido Polanco (34) is still a good option, but at his age dynasty league owners are better served to take a flyer on a younger option.
  • Will Rickie Weeks ever stay healthy and put things together?  We’ve all been waiting for years, but at 27-years old, he’s still worth taking a gamble on.
  • Scott Sizemore has the long-term potential to be a 15/15 option every year, to go along with a solid average (think .280ish).  While that may have more value than a Dan Uggla, Jose Lopez or Ian Stewart long-term, I wouldn’t draft him as a starter for 2010.
  • This could be the only chance you have to utilize Stewart as a 2B, with him now slated to be the full-time 3B in Colorado.  Keep that in mind when drafting him.

  1. The thing that worries me about Kendrick is Maizur Izturis. I realize that Izturis is a backup at 2B, 3B, & SS. But he is a pretty good and well rounded player. He would be a starter on a number of other teams and he will probably get around 350 AB and they have to come from somewhere. With him around Kendrick will probably lose about 200 AB that he would normally get if Izturis was on another team. So Kendrick will end up with 425 AB instead of 625 AB. Those 200 at bats can make a big difference in his end of year stats.

For that reason, I would drop him behind Lopez, Uggla and Stewart.

  2. where would gordon beckham fit into? #4?

  3. I wanna know how a former top 100 prospect in Callaspo has become so underrated that a guy like Sizemore who is less of a talent and less proven is ranked above him. And how a one year wonder like Barmes is also ranked ahead of him. I was wondering this before the season started. It makes no sense. No way should a less proven guy with less talent be put ahead of a more proven guy with more talent.

Neither Sizemore nor Barmes belong on that list. And Kendrick should be bottom of the list since he has been a bust since people started hyping him.
