Evening Roundup (Cameron, Verlander, Byrd & more)
If you are stuck in the house as Tropical Storm Hanna wreaks havoc in the northeast, here are a few news and notes for you:
- Tom Haudricourt of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (click here for the post) is reporting that Mike Cameron is out of the Brewers line-up tonight due to “a sore left knee”. The injury is “not considered serious” and he’s been replaced by Gabe Kapler. If you are using Cameron, I’d shift him over to your bench until we get a little bit more news.
- An article from The Miami Herald (click here for the article) is reporting that Marlon Byrd suffered a sprained left thumb, causing him to leave the game yesterday. X-rays were negative and he is considered day-to-day. Just monitor the pregame line-up if you are using him, but you probably can find a similar player on the waiver wire.
- The Texas Rangers have laid out a tentative pitching rotation for the rest of the way, and it includes four starts for Dustin Nippert while Scott Feldman will get just one according to Anthony Andro of The Star-Telegram (click here for the article). Nippert is coming off a great start and could become an intriguing option down the stretch, but one start certainly isn’t enough. He still has a 6.59 ERA over 56 innings in the major leagues this season. His next start is on Thursday against the A’s.
- According to Chico Harlan of The Washington Post (click here for the post) the Nationals have moved Jason Bergmann to the bullpen, replacing him with Shairon Martis. Martis pitched well in his major league debut and was good in 21 starts in the minors (5-6, 3.64 ERA, 99 K in 116.1 innings). Still, he pitches for the Nationals and isn’t worth using for the rest of this season.
- Steve Kornacki of mlive.com (click here for the article) is reporting that after watching tape comparing starts from this season and past seasons, bullpen coach Jeff Jones said, “We found some things, but nothing earth-shattering”. He has been a disaster this season but hopefully he shows some signs of life down the stretch so owners can have some confidence in him heading into ‘09.
