Players of the Week: Week 10

Hitter of the Week:
Carlos Pena has struggled for the majority of the season, but he exploded over the past week.  He went 8-24 (.333 average) with 9 RBI and 9 R.  Those numbers are good and all, but what stole the show (and the award for him) was hitting 6 HR.  In fact, he homered in the first five games of the week (he also homered in his last game from the prior scoring period).  When you explode like this, it’s impossible to go anywhere else for this award.

Honorable Mention:

  • Brandon Phillips – Cincinnati Reds – .538 (14-26), 1 HR, 3 RBI, 6 R, 2 SB
  • Josh Hamilton – Texas Rangers – .370 (10-27), 4 HR, 13 RBI, 7 R, 0 SB
  • Adam Dunn – Washington Nationals – .455 (10-22), 4 HR, 7 RBI, 7 R, 0 SB

Pitcher of the Week:
Stephen Strasurg had all the pressure on his shoulders.  Could he live up to the seemingly unrealistic hype surrounding his major league debut?  It was almost like it was out of a movie, because he exceeded most people’s wildest dreams in striking out 14 over 7 innings in his debut.  For the week he went 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 22 K over 12.1 innings.  Considering no one else struck out more then 18, he clearly separated himself from the field in his first week in the majors.

Honorable Mention:

  • Colby Lewis – Texas Rangers – 15.0 IP, 1.80 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, 15 K, 2 W
  • Jason Hammel – Colorado Rockies – 15.1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 9 K, 2 W
  • Matt Cain – San Francisco Giants – 16.0 IP, 0.56 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 9 K, 2 W
  • Ted Lilly – Chicago Cubs – 16.0 IP, 0.56 ERA, 0.38 WHIP, 11 K, 1 W
