Pitch or Ditch Options – September 23

Let’s take a look at a few of the potentially available Pitch & Ditch options for tomorrow:

Mitch Talbot – Cleveland Indians
He had a shoulder issue, which helps to explain why he’s made just one start since September 4.  How’d he do in that start?  He only failed to record an out, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk before being forced out.  While the start against Kansas City may appear to be a favorable one, there’s absolutely no reason to trust him.
Verdict – Ditch

Madison Bumgarner – San Francisco Giants
Over his last four starts he has allowed just four earned runs over 26.0 innings of work, despite going 0-2.  Since July 1 he’s only allowed more then three earned runs in a start twice.  With the Cubs on the schedule, of all the options potentially available, he’s the one I would use if he’s on the waiver wire.
Verdict – Pitch

Ross Detwiler – Washington Nationals
He has been pitching well coming out of the bullpen, with a 0.00 ERA over 6.0 innings of work.  He also had a 2.27 ERA over 10 minor league starts, but let’s not forget that this was the same pitcher who had a 5.00 ERA in 15 major league appearances (14 starts) in 2009.  The Astros are not a big hitting team, but there is just too much risk here to take the gamble on.
Verdict – Ditch

Jeff Francis – Colorado Rockies
Once a playoff hero, Francis has become a huge fantasy risk at this point.  He offers limited strikeout upside and has a potentially tough matchup with the Diamondbacks.  Don’t bother.
Verdict – Ditch
