Waiver Worthy: Week 15 Fallout: Joe Flacco, Toby Gerhart and More

by Will Overton

Fantasy championships could very well be on the line this coming week and if nothing else it’s semi-final week. If you’re still alive in your league there is no room for error and no room for playing guys just cause they got you there if there are better options out there on the waiver wire.

This also isn’t the time to make rash decisions and grab someone off waiver wire in a panic move that will backfire. You have to think things out in every aspect and try putting the best, most reasonable lineup possible out there.

Here are some guys who are available in a lot of leagues who have favorable matchups this week or could be looking at increased playing time:

Joe Flacco – QB, Baltimore Ravens: In anything deeper than a one QB, 12 team league Flacco is certainly not available. However, in those standard leagues who use one QB, you may very well be able to land Flacco and if you’re in need of a QB, this is a great option for the week. If you have someone like Phillip Rivers or Ben Roethlisberger in a tough matchup this week, riding with Flacco might be your answer. Flacco is facing off with the Texans shaky secondary this week and while he hasn’t had a ton of huge games, he’s been pretty consistently solid all season. Flacco could easily put up 250 yards and a pair of TD’s this week.

Toby Gerhart – RB, Jacksonville Jaguars: Toby Gerhart has been the absolute definition of underwhelming so far this season. The Jaguars signed him expecting an every down lead back and got what has been a bust so far. Gerhart has been given a second chance though with Denard Robinson being out for the remainder of the season and Gerhart back in the lead running back spot. This week the Jags get the Titans who are currently the league’s worst run defense. Gerhart wasn’t exactly making everyone take notice yesterday, but he did carry the ball 13 times for 54 yards which is at least 4.2 YPC. You could definitely do worse than Gerhart this week.

Shonn Greene – RB, Tennessee Titans: On the other side of the ball from Gerhart and the Jags is Shonn Greene and the Titans. The Jags run defense isn’t much better than the Titans. Like Gerhart, Shonn Greene lost his starting job, but due to Bishop Sankey’s ineffectiveness he seems to have gotten it back. Sankey ran the ball just three times yesterday while Greene carried it 16 times for 50 yards. I don’t like Greene from a talent standpoint, but he should get double digit carries and if he gets the ball down by the goal line he is capable of punching it across given his build.

Harry Douglas – WR, Atlanta Falcons: With Julio Jones out yesterday Harry Douglas stole the spotlight with 10 catches for 131 yards against the Steelers. It is expected that Julio Jones will return this coming week which is likely given that the Falcons actually still have a chance at the division despite a 5 – 9 record. Still, even if Jones is back Douglas could still have value. The Falcons are taking on the Saints who are the fourth worst pass defense and Douglas had six catches and 69 yards against them earlier this season. If Jones is somehow out again then Douglas is a great play, but even if he isn’t out Douglas could be a factor if you’re in need of a WR.

Doug Baldwin – WR, Seattle Seahawks: We’ll call Harry Douglas the deep league option and Baldwin a standard league one. The Seahawks don’t throw a ton, but when they do Baldwin is a regular target for Russell Wilson. Baldwin has 150 yards receiving in the last two weeks and has some upside as a play in standard leagues, probably three receiver formats. Baldwin gets the Cardinals who are good for racking up the yards against. Baldwin was actually shut down by them a couple weeks ago, but the upside is still there as the Cardinals are one of league’s worst pass defenses. Baldwin could be looking at five catches and 80 yards range this week and if he can add a TD to that it’s a really strong week.
