Snap Count: How Much Potential Value Does Darren Sproles Have?

According to Zach Berman (via Twitter), the Eagles running back snaps in Week 9 were as follows:

  • Darren Sproles – 60
  • Ryan Mathews – 8
  • Wendell Smallwood – 4

Reuben Frank later tweeted:

“Pederson acknowledged he needs to focus more on running the ball & having Wentz throw less rest of season. Said Sproles will be lead back.”

Thoughts:
Considering the snap count, Frank’s tweet really shouldn’t come as a surprise. Sproles racked up 16 touches, compared to 6 for Mathews. Considering the number of plays Mathews was on the field for, that’s actually a surprising number of touches and not something we’d be willing to depend on moving forward.

Sproles has generally been seen as more of a PPR back in the past, though he’s actually delivered running the football over the past two weeks:

  • at Dallas – 15 carries for 86 yards
  • at New York Giants – 13 carries for 57 yards

The Eagles schedule isn’t necessarily the easiest over the next few weeks, but his ability to catch the football and his time on the field is going to keep him in the conversation of viable options. Obviously he’s not going to be a RB1, but he has RB2 potential (especially in PPR formats) and is certainly on the FLEX spectrum depending on the matchup in any given week.

Don’t consider him a must use, as he likely will lose goal line touches (and thus limit his TD potential), but he’s well worth owning in all formats.
