We all know about the injury to Andrew Luck, which is looking more and more likely to keep him out for at least Week 1 of the regular season. However he’s not alone, as a few other quarterbacks have questions hanging over them. How have things been impacted on our rankings? Let’s take a look at how things currently stand:
- Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers (1)
- Tom Brady – New England Patriots (2)
- Matt Ryan – Atlanta Falcons (3)
- Drew Brees – New Orleans Saints (4)
- Russell Wilson – Seattle Seahawks (5)
- Derek Carr – Oakland Raiders (7)
- Andrew Luck – Indianapolis Colts (6)
- Jameis Winston – Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8)
- Cam Newton – Carolina Panthers (12)
- Ben Roethlisberger – Pittsburgh Steelers (9)
- Marcus Mariota – Tennessee Titans (10)
- Matthew Stafford – Detroit Lions (11)
- Kirk Cousins – Washington Redskins (13)
- Dak Prescott – Dallas Cowboys (14)
- Philip Rivers – Los Angeles Chargers (15)
- Andy Dalton – Cincinnati Bengals (16)
- Eli Manning – New York Giants (17)
- Carson Wentz – Philadelphia Eagles (18)
- Carson Palmer – Arizona Cardinals (19)
- Tyrod Taylor – Buffalo Bills (20)
- Jay Cutler – Miami Dolphins (23)
- Sam Bradford – Minnesota Vikings (25)
- Joe Flacco – Baltimore Ravens (22)
- Trevor Siemian – Denver Broncos (NR)
- Jared Goff – Los Angeles Rams (NR)
Dropped Off The Rankings – Blake Bortles (JAX, 21), Deshaun Watson (HOU, 24)
Thoughts:
- It appears to be becoming more and more unlikely that Andrew Luck is ready for the Colts’ Week 1 game against the Rams. In a series of tweets Stephen Holder reported that, “Pressed Pagano on a Luck timeline and whether they’re running outta time for Wk 1.. Said he still doesnt have a timeline and isn’t worried about it. Then he gave me a few cliches and laughed if off. I don’t have a good sense”. While one missed game wouldn’t cripple his value, there could be a chance he misses multiple weeks. While it’s hard to move him down too far, there’s a risk that he could quickly start to plummet.
- On the other end of the spectrum is Cam Newton, who is expected to play in the third preseason game and is obviously on track to play Week 1. There’s no questioning his potential upside, and if he can stay healthy he’s an easy Top 10 option with Top 5 potential.
- All signs are pointing to Blake Bortles losing the Jacksonville quarterback job to Chad Henne. That statement is all you really need to know about Bortles and his “potential”.
- While it appears like Joe Flacco will be ready for Week 1, he will have very limited practice time if he is. Considering he’s working his way back from a back injury, there’s the potential that even if “healthy” his production could suffer. While he’s a solid upside pick in two-quarterback formats, you had better make sure you have ample depth before selecting him.
- Yes that’s “bust” Jared Goff at the bottom of the rankings. He’s coming off a big performance against the Raiders and maybe the addition of Sammy Watkins and the change in coaching staff can help him to find his footing. While he’s hardly a trustworthy option, there is some upside worth considering.

IN a 12 team league picking 12. Would u take Elliott at pick 13. Do I think suspension might get reduced or can he play all season like Brady did
I wouldn’t be surprised if the suspension is reduced to 4 games, but I don’t think it’ll be postponed all together. I could see using the #13 on him, depending on your risk tolerance
cam newton or winston for week one. I also have Mike Evans on my team.
Winston. I like NEwton, but it may take him a game or two to really settle in given injury
i have Rivers/Wentz in a 14 team standard league. Who do you think will finish with the better year? Will either of them finish as a QB1 in your opinion? Thanks for the advice.
Rivers def. the better option and could be a low-end QB1 this season. Wentz has potential, but I’d rather bet on Rivers
Hey Prof – Would you advise playing J Winston and sitting A Rodgers week 1 due to match up or stick to my expensive 1st round pick? 10 team PPR league.
I’d say don’t get cute. You took Rodgers in the first round for a reason and you can’t sit him Week 1. Don’t sit your stars
