Week 6 Rankings (2017): Top 15 Defenses

by Ray Kuhn

Here we are for another week of searching for defenses. Thanks to injuries and just poor offensive performances there are options aplenty. Let’s take a look at how our options rank for this week:

  1. Baltimore Ravens – vs. Chicago
  2. Denver Broncos – vs. New York Giants
  3. Washington Redskins – vs. San Francisco
  4. Tennessee Titans – vs. Indianapollis
  5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – at Arizona
  6. Atlanta Falcons – vs. Miami Dolphins
  7. Jacksonville Jaguars – vs. Los Angeles Rams
  8. Green Bay Packers – vs. Minnesota
  9. Kansas City Chiefs – vs. Pittsburgh
  10. Houston Texans – vs. Cleveland
  11. Los Angeles Rams – vs. Jacksonville
  12. New England Patriots – at New York Jets
  13. Carolina Panthers – vs. Philadelphia
  14. New Orleans Saints – vs. Detroit
  15. Philadelphia Eagles – at Carolina

Notes:

  • Coming off their bye week the Broncos get a gift match-up against the Giants at home. Denver is ranked 11th among fantasy defenses and they face a team that finished last week’s game with just one healthy wide receiver. Even after adding two receivers from the practice squad, New York’s offense leaves a lot to be desired as they have struggled to get anything going this season. It likely will be another week without a win as the Broncos add to the 10 sacks they have so far against a sub-par offensive line.
  • Based on the fact that Colts have allowed opponents to score the most fantasy points against them so far this season, we have to consider the Titans as an option this week. However there is a reason why Tennessee is owned in just 16.3% of ESPN leagues as they are the 30th ranked fantasy defense. Part of that can be attributed to the 57 points Houston scored against them two weeks ago, but they did hold Miami to 10 points last week. Tennessee has generated six turnovers along with eight sacks, and they should build on both of those numbers against Indianapolis.
  • As you search for defenses a good place to start is rookie quarterbacks. That brings us to the Chicago Bears and Mitch Trubisky, who made his debut this past Monday. Baltimore has had success as the fourth ranked defense, and that is in spite of the 44 points they gave up to the Jaguars in London. The Ravens started off the season with back to back games of four interceptions, and they should be able to take advantage of Trubisky (who threw for just 128 yards and an interception last week).
