Sunday Morning Start ‘Em or Sit ‘Em: Joe Mixon, T.Y. Hilton, Charles Clay & More

by Will Overton

Week 10 is set to kick off in just a few hours now, and if you’re like me you are spending the morning drinking your coffee and agonizing over fantasy football lineups. We will try and help you get caught up with some players I like or don’t like based on recent news:

Bilal Powell – New York Jets – Running Back
News broke on Friday that Matt Forte wouldn’t be playing this week due to the continued swelling in his knee. The last few weeks Forte has been the Jets featured back, but now Bilal Powell should get a chance to win the coaching staff over. Powell will almost certainly still share snaps with Elijah McGuire, but the Bucs run defense has been pretty average this season, and Powell is also a better than average receiver out of the backfield and Josh McCown loves to throw to RB’s. This is a good opportunity for Powell and fantasy owners should take advantage. Verdict: Low End RB2

Terrance Williams – Dallas Cowboys – Wide Receiver
On the injury report earlier this week, Terrance Williams now has the clean bill of health for this Sunday’s game against Atlanta. Williams is coming off a career day where he caught nine passes for 141 yards. There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding to use Williams though. One positive for him is the suspension of Ezekiel Elliot, because I think we are going to see Dak Prescott throwing early and often on a Falcons secondary that is suspect at best.

The other factor is the health of Dez Bryant. Much of Williams’ production last week came with Dez hobbled. It looks like Dez will play today as reports are he was moving well on Friday at practice. Just to further that, Adam Schefter tweeted this morning that:

“Cowboys WR Dez Bryant, listed as questionable for today with knee and ankle injury, has said he will play vs. Falcons.”

If Dez is playing then Williams’ value takes a hit, if Dez is out then Williams gets a big bump in value. If you own Dez and Williams is a free agent in your league, it’d be wise to pick Williams up just in case Dez is a late scratch.
Verdict: High Risk/High Reward Flex Play (WR2 Upside If Dez Is Out)

Joe Mixon – Cincinnati Bengals – Running Back
The opportunity for a Joe Mixon breakout keeps increasing. Yesterday it was announced that Jeremy Hill was being placed on IR and would be out for the rest of the season. This not only means Mixon should get more carries, but it means he should be the primary goal line back now which is a huge boost. Mixon hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire, averaging 2.9 YPC, but as we saw with Jeremy Hill last year, goal line TD’s can do a lot to make up for a lack of yardage. The Titans run defense has been pretty good, so I don’t see Mixon having a huge game, but 50 yards looks a lot better if you can add a TD to it.
Verdict: Solid Flex Play

Danny Amendola – New England Patriots – Wide Receiver
Friday the Patriots made it official that Chris Hogan would not be able to play in tonight’s game against the Broncos. The buzz has been about Phillip Dorsett finally getting on the field, but I think he’s still a very desperate play this week. Danny Amendola on the other hand gets a big bump in my opinion, so long as his knee is as healthy as reports are saying. Amendola plays in the slot, not on the outside like Hogan, but with Hogan out there are more targets to go around in general and I think a decent amount go Amendola’s way. The Broncos defense hasn’t been as stout lately and I think the Patriots put up points here with a very solid game for Amendola coming.
Verdict: Solid WR2 Option

Charles Clay – Buffalo Bills – Tight End
There has been a lot of buzz this week about the return of Charles Clay who has missed the last three games. Clay was looking good earlier this season before the injury and we know he is a favorite target for Tyrod Taylor. I hate to be the guy throwing water on the hype, but I am a little worried about this one. Clay has been limited at practice all week, and after taking three weeks off it would have been nice to see a full practice. I worry about Clay’s availability, but even if he is available and playing I think he’ll be on the field a little less than we all expect.
Verdict: If He Plays, He’s a Lower End TE1 Play

Vernon Davis – Washington Redskins – Tight End
Jordan Reed has been practicing on a limited basis and is still considered questionable, but Ian Rapoport tweeted this morning:

“#Redskins TE Jordan Reed, who missed practice on Friday with a hamstring injury, is not expected to play today, source said. But LT Trent Williams, battling through a painful knee injury, is expecting to play, somehow.”

Not only is Reed very questionable, so is Jamison Crowder, the Redskins slot guy. Last week both Crowder and Reed missed the game with the Seahawks and Vernon Davis came out with a solid six catch and 72 yard performance. I think Davis is going to be a sneaky good play no matter who ends up playing, but if Reed, Crowder, or both miss this game it’s going to bump Davis way up.
Verdict: Low End TE1, Must Use If Reed Or Crowder Are Out

Additional notes by The Rotoprofessor:

T.Y. Hilton – Indianapolis Colts – Wide Receiver
He’s coming off a monster game against Houston (5 receptions, 175 yards, 2 TD), and while there were questions Adam Schefter tweeted this morning:

“Colts WR T.Y. Hilton, listed as questionable for today with groin injury, will play vs. Steelers, per source.”

The Steelers are not the Texans, though, as they are allowing the second fewest points per week to opposing wide receivers.  They have also allowed 21 passing plays of 20+ yards, 9th fewest in the league, and 4 TD (tied for second fewest in the league).

It’s impossible to think that he’s going to come reasonably close to matching last week’s performance, especially since there’s no guarantee he plays, and could very easily put up a major bust performance.  Consider him a WR3 and nothing more, but far too risky to trust.
Verdict – Desperation WR3, but too risky to trust as anything more

Emmanuel Sanders – Denver Broncos – Wide Receiver
It’s easy to get excited about the matchup with the Patriots, but the defense has been playing a lot better of late.  He’s also going to play banged up, according to Ian Rapoport (via Twitter):

“#Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (ankle), listed as questionable, should be good to go against the #Patriots tonight, I’m told.”

Still, with a Sunday night game (meaning few viable alternatives) and being TD dependent is anyone really willing to trust him?
Verdict – Too risky to trust

Watkins best matchup but could not get targeted

    Welcome back professor,

    10 team standard.

I have Eziekiel Elliot, Morris, and McFaddon. Planning on McCoy and McKinnon as starting backs. Starting Robby Anderson Golden Tate. I have K. Benjamin and TY Hilton. Thinking of benching them and playing Alfred Morris in Flex considering Benjamin’s first game in Buffalo and Hilton not having a great matchup and questioable health.
