Week 14 Rankings (2017): Top 15 Defenses

by Ray Kuhn

The good thing about streaming defenses as we reach the playoffs is that it gets easier. Not necessarily the decisions, in fact it gets harder as the stakes become more serious. What does work in your favor is that there is less competition for the week’s top options. Let’s take a look at how the defenses rank for this week:

  1. Cincinnati Bengals –  vs. Chicago
  2. New England Patriots – at Miami
  3. Green Bay Packers – at Cleveland
  4. Los Angeles Chargers – vs. Washington
  5. Pittsburgh Steelers – vs. Baltimore
  6. Minnesota Vikings – at Carolina
  7. Buffalo Bills – vs. Indianapolis
  8. Jacksonville Jaguars – vs. Seattle
  9. Seattle Seahawks – at Jacksonville
  10. Tennessee Titans – at Arizona
  11. Denver Broncos – vs. New York Jets
  12. Minnesota Vikings – at Carolina
  13. Dallas Cowboys – at New York Giants
  14. Houston Texnas – vs. San Francisco
  15. San Francisco 49ers – at Houston

  • The 49ers are owned in 2.7% of ESPN leagues, and that is for good reason. San Francisco is currently ranked last among fantasy defenses, but the Texans have allowed the seventh most points to opposing defenses and over the past four weeks San Francisco has allowed an average of 20 points per game. I wouldn’t be too concerned about the Texans lighting up the scoreboard, but San Francisco will need to force turnovers for this to truly be a valuable week. With seven interceptions and 22 sacks this season, the 49ers might be able to capitalize on Tom Savage.
  • Chicago has yet to get things going with their rookie quarterback, and the Bengals are slated to be the next team to take advantage of it. Cincinnati has had success defending the passing game and Mitch Trubisky doesn’t exactly generate fear in opposing defenses. In their last four games the Bengals have 12 sacks and I would expect them to easily add to that total.
  • The weather will likely be problematic in Cleveland and that will make things only more difficult for the Browns and their rookie quarterback. As it is, opposing defenses have scored the second most points against them and the Packers shouldn’t be any different. Last week Green Bay picked up seven sacks, and against an offense that is tied for 29th in sack percentage they are due for another big week.
