2018 Preseason Rankings: Top 15 Defenses

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

Picking a defense for your fantasy squad is often overlooked, but making the right selection could make a big difference in your ultimate success.  That’s not to say that they are as valuable as your star running back or wide receiver, but there are plenty of examples of a defense winning you a week.  Who are the best defenses heading into the season?  Who should we ignore?  Let’s take a look at how things currently rank:

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars
  2. Los Angeles Rams
  3. Philadelphia Eagles
  4. Minnesota Vikings
  5. Baltimore Ravens
  6. Denver Broncos
  7. Los Angeles Chargers
  8. Houston Texans
  9. Carolina Panthers
  10. Pittsburgh Steelers
  11. New Orleans Saints
  12. New England Patriots
  13. Detroit Lions
  14. Kansas City Chiefs
  15. Chicago Bears

Thoughts:

  • The Los Angeles Rams made a lot of changes heading into 2018, bringing in some big personalities.  They signed Ndamukong Suh and acquired both Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib to bolster their secondary.  There are going to be concerns that it will all clash, but there’s no doubt that the potential is there to be among the elite groups in the game.  This all assumes that they can resign Aaron Donald, though they appear to be making progress there as well.
  • Piggy backing off one of the Rams’ new additions, it seems odd that the Broncos were willing to jettison Talib doesn’t it?  The addition of Bradley Chubb in the draft is going to strengthen a pass rush that generated just 33 sacks in ’17 and they did sign Tramaine Brock to help fill the gap in the secondary.  The move was likely an attempt to get younger and it shouldn’t have a significant impact on their overall outlook.
  • We all know the talent that the Houston Texans have, but injuries have helped to derail them.  J.J. Watt is the big key, having played 8 games over the past two seasons.  If he’s back to his 2015 form, this could prove to be a Top 5 defense by year’s end (though that’s a rather big “if”).

Hey Professor, are you releasing a draft guide for football?

    • Unfortunately we aren’t going to be selling a football guide this year (though we’ll have news on our baseball guide soon!). I truly do appreciate your support and couldn’t do any of this without you and our other loyal readers!
