Week 6 Rankings: Top 25 Quarterbacks

It seems like all of the top NFL quarterbacks will take the field this week, outside of the San Diego Chargers and Philip Rivers.  So how do things stack up for Week 6?  Let’s take a look at our current rankings:

  1. Drew Brees – New Orleans Saints – at Tampa Bay
  2. Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers – vs. St. Louis
  3. Tom Brady – New England Patriots – vs. Dallas
  4. Michael Vick – Philadelphia Eagles – at Washington
  5. Tony Romo – Dallas Cowboys – at New England
  6. Matthew Stafford – Detroit Lions – vs. San Francisco
  7. Cam Newton – Carolina Panthers – at Atlanta
  8. Eli Manning – New York Giants – vs. Buffalo
  9. Ryan Fitzpatrick – Buffalo Bills – at New York Giants
  10. Matt Ryan – Atlanta Falcons – vs. Carolina
  11. Ben Roethlisberger – Pittsburgh Steelers – vs. Jacksonville
  12. Matt Schaub – Houston Texans – at Baltimore
  13. Joe Flacco – Baltimore Ravens – vs. Houston
  14. Sam Bradford – St. Louis Rams – at Green Bay
  15. Jay Cutler – Chicago Bears – vs. Minnesota
  16. Mark Sanchez – New York Jets – vs. Miami
  17. Josh Freeman – Tampa Bay Buccaneers – vs. New Orleans
  18. Colt McCoy – Cleveland Browns – at Oakland
  19. Andy Dalton – Cincinnati Bengals – vs. Indianapolis
  20. Jason Campbell – Oakland Raiders – vs. Cleveland
  21. Rex Grossman – Washington Redskins – vs. Philadelphia
  22. Curtis Painter – Indianapolis Colts – at Cincinnati
  23. Alex Smith – San Francisco 49ers – at Detroit
  24. Donovan McNabb – Minnesota Vikings – at Chicago
  25. Blaine Gabbert – Jacksonville Jaguars – at Pittsburgh

Thoughts:

  • There are quite a few quarterbacks posting impressive seasons in 2011, aren’t there?  It’s hard to pick against Drew Brees for the top spot for the coming week, however.  Not only has he thrown for 1,769 yards, 12 TD and 5 INT through his first five games, he gets to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who has been among the worst passing defenses in the league (267.0 passing yards/game).  Among the performances against them have been Matthew Stafford (305 yards & 3 TD) and Matt Ryan (330 yards & 1 TD).  Look for Brees to have a big day.
  • With the Jets vowing to go with a ground and pound attack in Week 5 the Patriots defense managed to hold Mark Sanchez to 166 passing yards.  Does anyone believe that they are going to be able to do the same thing to Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys?  The game should be a shootout making Romo a solid play in all formats.
  • Speaking of the Jets ground and pound attack, they did appear to get Shonn Greene going in Week 5 (21 carries for 83 yards and 1 TD).  Even taking on a Miami Dolphins defense that has struggled against the pass (307.0 yards/game, 9 TD, 2 INT), you are going to want to be careful with Mark Sanchez.  You just don’t know if they are going to continue to try and run the ball or not.
  • Cam Newton was at it again in Week 5, not only throwing for 224 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT, but also running for 27 yards and a touchdown.  We all know that the Falcons are going to look to open up the passing game, meaning this one can easily fall into a high-scoring affair.  While the Panthers have been finding a running game of late (DeAngelo Williams had 9 rushes for 115 yards and 1 TD), the Falcons passing defense has been poor to date.  Look for Newton to shine once again.
  • Eli Manning continues to produce.  Granted, he did throw 3 INT in Week 5, but he also threw for 420 yards and 3 TD.  He now has 11 TD over his past four games and three straight of at least 250 yards (and back-to-back games over 320).  He gets a Bills defense that has been prone to be taken down by the pass this season, meaning Manning is going to be a viable option in all formats.
  • Despite being banged up Ben Roethlisberger went out for Week 5 and threw for 228 yards and 5 TD.  Does anyone want to doubt him again?  While the Jaguars have defended the pass well thus far (215.4 passing yards/game), the best quarterback they’ve faced has been Ryan Fitzpatrick.  Outside of that, they haven’t really taken on someone that is going to scare anyone.  Look for Roethlisberger to continue to produce, especially if Rashard Mendenhall is not ready to return.
  • Matt Schaub has been solid this season, throwing for 1,377 yards and 9 TD, but does anyone trust him against the Baltimore Ravens defense?  Consider him a viable QB2 this week, but a low-end option in one-quarterback formats.
  • So far it looks like Curtis Painter could be a productive option, doesn’t it?  Since stepping in during Week 3 he has thrown for 618 yards, 4 TD and 0 INT.  In his two starts he has thrown for 2 TD each.  He does take on a Bengals team that has allowed just 191.0 passing yards/game thus far this season, so he’s going to be a low-end option.  However, if he puts up a strong performance once again his stock is going to increase dramatically.

  1. Triz says:

Oh Bills, I hope I don’t jinx you, but Rivers is on a bye so I HAVE to play Fitzpatrick this week …

  2. Brandon says:

Need a little help making a decision..
I have been Offered Schaub, Santonio Holmes, and Roddy White for Michael Vick and VJAx. in a 10 team PPR league.. On the surface it seems like a no brainer to me except it’s a keeper league and if I were to keep Vick again i would only give up an 8th round pick.. Makes it a little less enticing.. Should i go for the better deeper team now and forego next season and having a keeper?

  3. Triz – Hopefully you don’t jinx him, but Fred Jackson should continue to produce at least!

Brandon – The question is do you feel like you have a chance to win this season? What is your current record? It doesn’t make sense to sell out for this year if you don’t really have a chance to compete.

    • Triz says:

Any idea when the TE and RB lists will be ready? Our waivers go through at 3 EST this morning :)

      Thanks!

(Mostly still thinking about dropping Helu for Torain. This would be a really good week to win!).

  4. Brandon says:

I am 3-2 and tied for 3rd place.. I accepted the trade. Sure it’s hard to give up a keeper, but Vick and his injuries i feel I am better to play for this season and go into next season either w/o a keeper or somewhere along the line i trade for someone worth keeping.

  5. Triz – RB are now up, with TE coming tomorrow. Sorry! And yes, I would endorse the Torain for Helu move at this point :)

Brandon – Good luck! I don’t disagree with you. If you are in position to compete and win (and it sounds like you are), you have to take your shot at the title. Next year will work itself out.

  6. Sara says:

Based on these rankings, you’d recommend playing Fitz over Ryan this week? I’m having trouble deciding…

    • Sara says:

Also, I was wondering if offering Felix for Stafford to the guy who also has Cam and Rivers would be a good trade for me? He’s really desperate for RBs with Charles/Hightower/Mendy.
      My RBs: CJ/Turner/Benson
If so, I’ll be targeting Torain on waivers, and if not I’ll probably pick up Tebow.
      Thanks!

    • Sara – I think the trade would be a steal for you, though I just don’t see the other owner doing it. Worth a shot, but it’s a long shot at best.

As for Fitzpatrick & Ryan, it really is a coinflip. I’d probably lean towards Fitz, but you can go either way.

  7. dennis says:

Romo or Stafford this week? I think Romo has the better matchup.

  8. heath says:

    *****I NEED SERIOUS HELP ASAP*****.

I am in 2QB league and and we can only place 3 guys on bench. Due to can’t cut list I can’t drop the players that I wanted to or neither can I trade em. For Sunday I don’t have an DEF nor a kicker and I am not sure What to do.

    Here’s my team
    QB-Aaron Rogers
    QB- Tony Romo
    WR-Miles Austin
    WR-Marques Colston
    W/R/T-Jeremy Maclin
    RB-Frank Gore
    RB-Shonn Greene
    TE-Vernon Davis
    BN- Andre Johnson
    BN- Antonio Gates
    BN- Eli Manning
    BN- Vincent Jackson
    BN- Brandon Lloyd

Like I sad earlier we are only allowed 3 guys on BN- Since I don’t have DEF OR KICKER I HAVE FIVE GUYS ON BENCH and I can only Trade or Drop. Eli manning, Maclin and Antonio Gates.

Not sure what to do at this point Please hep me out. I was thinking about Trading Eli manning for Calvin Johnson and dropping Maclin and picking up a DEF. and go without a Kicker. Not sure what to do.

    • There aren’t too many options, unfortunately. I can see dropping Gates, considering the injuries at this point, though that isn’t ideal.

If you could trade a WR, I’d move Lloyd, but given your other options he’s rarely going to be a viable choice for you. That’s the other guy I’d part with.

In a two-QB league, having a great third option is a great situation to be in. I wouldn’t let him go.

  9. heath says:

Brandon Lloyd is on can’t cut list that was my first option of dropping. I really don’t wanna drop Antonio Gates Either and I hate to give up Eli manning like you said. So I am in a really bad situation. As long as i have DEF i am fine. I can live without not having a Kicker for one week. But in order to do that I have to give up Gates.

  10. heath says:

Dropped Gates for now and picked up DEF. now I am only lacking Kicker but seems like I am going without a kicker this week.

  11. Chris says:

I know Matt Ryan could have a good week, but should I stay with Cam Newton?
