According to Phil Richards and Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star:
“What wouldn’t qualify as one of Dallas Clark’s better seasons might have taken a turn for the worse Sunday, when the Indianapolis Colts veteran tight end suffered an injury to his lower left leg.
The situation is more acutely critical because Brody Eldridge suffered a hand injury, leaving Jacob Tamme the lone healthy tight end on the roster.”
We still have not gotten any definitive word on Clark’s injury, though he has already been ruled out for Week 10. On the season he has 28 receptions for 287 yards and 2 TD.
The Professor’s Take:
It’s the second straight season where Clark has had injury issues, as he was limited to just six games in 2010. The latter gave Jacob Tamme a chance to emerge, as he had 67 receptions for 631 yards and 4 TD. However that success definitely hasn’t carried over into 2011, as he will enter Week 10 with just 3 receptions for 7 yards (despite appearing in all nine games).
I think we would all feel a little bit better about Tamme as a sleeper again if one of two things were happening:
- Peyton Manning was the quarterback
- Dallas Clark had produced significantly better
Without either of those things it is extremely difficult to bank on Tamme even coming close to his 2010 success. If Clark, who has proven to be one of the best tight ends in the league, can’t produce viable numbers why would we think Tamme could?
Though we haven’t seen it yet (and that could partly be because he likely hasn’t been on the field much), it is possible that Tamme and Curtis Painter have a rapport with one another already. Remember, both entered last season as second teamers, so they likely have had time working together.
That’s not to say that anyone should be grabbing him and immediately thrusting him into their lineups. However, given what he did a year ago, there is a chance that he could quickly become viable. Monitor him closely this weekend and see what happens.
