Thoughts:

  • We all know the Giants secondary is questionable, especially with the injuries, which will make both Dez Bryant and Mile Austin (if healthy) favorable options.  Of course, the Giants’ vaunted pass rush could help to limit Tony Romo and company’s ability to produce.  Just be careful before we dub them Top 5 options.
  • If Hakeem Nicks is healthy (and it appears that he is), he will get another chance to rack up some big plays against the Cowboys.  In two games against Dallas last season Nicks had 13 receptions for 239 yards and 1 TD while his teammate Victor Cruz had 12 catches for 252 yards and 1 TD.  Yes, the Cowboys made an effort to improve their secondary, but there is every reason to think that the Giants duo will once again wreak havoc.  While the health concerns have Cruz ahead on the rankings, both are must use options and arguably WR1.
  • San Francisco’s defense may be the best in the league, but they are much better against the run than the pass.  Plus, does anyone really believe they can shut down the Packers passing attack?  Slow it, maybe, but not stop it.  Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson should remain top options despite the matchup.
  • Normally the Chiefs boast one of the elite defensive backs in the league in Brandon Flowers, but right now it is a huge question mark if he plays.  He missed the entire preseason with a foot injury so, even if he does play, will he really be 100%?  We would’ve been a little bit skeptical about Roddy White and/or Julio Jones, but with Flowers not likely at full strength they both could be in for impressive days.
  • Can the Cardinals QB get the ball to Larry Fitzgerald in order to make plays?  He always manages to produce, no matter who is throwing the ball, so don’t shy away.  Of course, an elite QB would make him that much more appealing.
  • Steve Smith’s status on these rankings is contingent on his health, of course.  If he’s 100% he is a definite WR1.
  • While A.J. Green should have a big season, in his one game against the Ravens in 2011 he managed just 2 receptions and 26 yards.  It’s just one game so you don’t want to make too big of a deal out of it, but it wouldn’t be shocking if he got off to a slow start.  While most weeks he will be a WR1, I’d consider him more of a WR2 in Week 1.
  • Most weeks I would pick Demaryius Thomas over Eric Decker.  However against the Steelers, where the big play may not be as available, I would take Decker.  That said, both players are going to be borderline WR2 in all formats with Peyton Manning throwing them the ball.
  • How much will we get out of Mike Wallace after he held out and missed a lot of the preseason?  Time will tell, but I would think it may take a week or two to get him up to speed.

  1. jon says:

Interesting to see Torry over Dwayne (I own both). You think Torrey’s starts living up to his sleeper status right away? that Bower starts slow? just wondering, thanks!

  2. jason says:

who will get more targets? nate burleson or titus young?

  3. jon – Yea, I happen to be a big believer in Smith and I think Bowe’s holdout could hinder him in Week 1.

jason – I would think it will definitely be Young.

  4. Brandon says:

Got offered a trade of me giving up shonn Greene and green Ellis for Eric decker and nate burleson. If made decker would be my new Flex. Overall I think I maybe giving up a little more just because that’s 2 starting RBs but I think If I only needed one player Decker is the best in the trade. Your thoughts? Desean Jackson could be subbed for Decker in the trade too it’s my preference

  5. Brandon says:

Forte Fred Jackson Percy harvin and Hakeem nicks

Bench Daniel Thomas Blount Eddie royal Steve smith(STL) Shane vereen and Michael bush

It’s a PPR league I just see more value with decker as my flex

    • I would be hesitant to trade both Green-Ellis & Greene, not necessarily for your FLEX but as an injury replacement/bye week fill-in. You are leaving yourself extremely thin there and, if an injury were to happen, you’d be in really bad shape at the RB position.

I could see trading one if you wanted to, but I wouldn’t move both.

  6. muddy cleats says:

2 names that are not on the list that prob will be there next week –
    Devery Henderson
    Austin Collie
    both starters…
Henderson has done well when given the chance and was targeted a lot in the preseason…
Hopefully Collie can keep his bell from being run – he was clicking with Luck before the hit and the Colts will be throwing a ton playing catch up….

  7. Jay says:

    rb-jamaal charles
    lesean mccoy

    wr-jordy nelson
    percy harvin
    demaryius thomas

    flex-?

Who should I put in for a flex position?

donald brown, michael bush, toby gerhart, denarius moore, and titus young?

    • For me it comes down to Titus Young, Toby Gerhart (depending on if Adrian Peterson is playing or not) or Donald Brown. Generally I would lean towards the RB, but I actually think I like Young slightly better on this one. Unless AP isn’t playing, I think he offers the most upside at this point.

  8. RT says:

RP – Who do you think for my flex spot?

    B Lafell
    L Robinson
    G Little
    M Williams
C Benson – He gets benched this week

    My starting lineup

    M Vick
    A Foster
    S Jackson
    R White
    S Jackson
    B Pettigrew
    D Akers
    SF Defense

    Thanks!

  9. Triz says:

I’d like flex help also please! My options are Percy Harvin, Donald Brown and Stevie Johnson. I think from your rankings they are pretty close.

    Thanks!

  10. RT – I would go with Little, though it’s close.

Triz – close, but definitely Harvin for me.

  11. Roll Tide says:

    Professor:

    I’m in a PPR scoring league with 1 RB, 2 WRs, 1 FLEX (WR/RB/TE)

    At RB I have: M Lynch/ K Smith/ B Green-Ellis/ R Jennings/ M Ingram.
    And at WR: G Jennings/ D Bryant/ T Smith

Need some help with my line-up due to Lynch’s back spasms and with MJD reporting to JAX last week as well as the Law Firm going against the Ravens. Having started Dez earlier this week I currently have K Smith at RB with G Jennings at the other WR spot and Torrey at FLEX.

    Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for the help!

    • I definitely agree with starting Smith and Jennings.

As for the FLEX, it sounds like Lynch is going to play and since Smith doesn’t play until Monday you have the flexibility to wait and see how things develop during the day.

At the same time, you are in an envious position that you have two extremely capable options. Smith is a very good play in all formats, so if you are concerned with Lynch going down early (which is possible), I would go with Smith.

If you are a gambler, I would go with Lynch. It all depends on your risk aversion.
