Week 2 Rankings: Top 50 Wide Receivers

There are a few injury concerns (like Jeremy Maclin and Greg Jennings) that need to be balanced.  What about how Kenny Britt should be valued in his return to the lineup.  You also have to consider how the Week 1 disappointments are able to rebound this week.  Let’s try to put it all together for our Week 2 rankings:

Thoughts:

  • Will today’s Bears-Packers game turn into a shootout?  Whether it does or it doesn’t, we all know that Brandon Marshall is going to get ample opportunities to produce.  While the Packers only allowed 191 passing yards in Week 1, the allowed 191 yards to Alex Smith and the San Francisco 49ers…  The Bears are a much more potent passing team, and Marshall has to be considered a Top 5 option for Week 2.
  • The Giants passing attack was not what we expected in Week 1.  Taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I wouldn’t expect a repeat in Week 2.  While Victor Cruz gets the slight edge in the rankings due to the injury concerns of Hakeem Nicks, both are must use options in all formats (barring a change in the news).  I would expect them to both have big bounce back performances.
  • A.J. Green had a lot of hype heading into the season, so you know many owners were disappointed when he “only” had 5 receptions for 70 yards in the opening game.  Don’t get discouraged, he should be in for a good performance against the Browns.
  • Assuming Pierre Garcon is healthy, how could we not consider him nearly a WR1 for the coming week?  His rapport with Robert Griffin III was obvious and there is no reason to think the Rams, who allowed 346 passing yards in Week 1, will be able to slow down the duo.
  • Reggie Wayne was targeted 18 times last week.  While he’s not going to be targeted quite that many times on a weekly basis, there’s no reason to think that he’s going to have ample opportunities to produce.  He’s not the player he once was, but he still is a solid WR2.
  • While a matchup with the Jets is normally a reason to avoid a wide receiver, what happens if Darrelle Revis doesn’t play?  There’s a very real possibility that happens, thanks to Revis’ concussion.  That makes both Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown highly recommended options.
  • I know I recently said that I would consider selling high on Wes Welker (click here for the article).  I also know that Brandon Lloyd received more targets in Week 1 and that Welker was an extreme disappointment.  That said, would it really surprise anyone if Tom Brady went out and made a concerted effort to get Welker involved early and often?  I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a huge game.
  • With Jeremy Maclin hurting DeSean Jackson should be the focus of the passing game this week.  While it is a tough draw, and he needs Michael Vick to right the ship, I certainly wouldn’t shy away from Jackson (or Maclin for that matter if healthy) in three receiver formats.
  •  Fantasy owners are going to want to be cautious with Kenny Britt, as he is going to be eased back into the offense.  However, this will likely be the last week that he’s only a questionable option.
  • While Kevin Ogletree wasn’t a well-known name entering the year he broke out in prime time in Week 1.  Can we really expect him to match that type of performance?  Of course not, but while there are numerous other options in the offense we all saw Laurent Robinson flourish in the role last season.  As a third receiver, he’s well worth considering.
  • Greg Little should be the top receiver in Cleveland, but until he develops a rapport with Brandon Weeden and avoids the drops, it is impossible to trust him.

    Question #1:
    *PPR only for WRs
Need 2 WR and 2 Flex:
    Reggie Bush
    Frank Gore
    Nate Washington
    Justin Blackmon
    Lance Moore
    Mike Williams (TB)
    Titus Young
    Kendall Wright

    Question #2:
    Falcons D/ST vs Denver
    or
    Titans D/ST @ San Diego

    Question #3:
    Pick my flex spot:
    Jeremy Maclin (injured) vs Baltimore
    Mike Williams @ Giants
or drop Williams for any of these guys:
    Nate Washington
    Robert Meachem
    Santana Moss

    Question #4:
Want to drop David Wilson. Who should I pick up?
    Roy Helu
    Evan Royster
    James Starks
    Brandon Jacobs
    Kendall Hunter
    Jacquizz Rodgers

    • Q1 – Bush, Gore, Moore & Blackmon (though Washington is just behind, depending on what the news is with Britt)

Q2 – I’d go Atlanta, though neither thrill me

Q3 – If Maclin is healthy and playing it’s him, otherwise I prefer Washington for this week. I’d say, given the depth u have (if Maclin is a FLEX option), I wouldn’t mind dropping Williams.

Q4 – I’d say Hunter or Rodgers. While Helu/Royster are appealing, no one can predict what is going to happen there.

  3. Nick Tenaglia says:

wow its amazing how one flukey game makes everyone think that Garcon is a WR1. He had one catch that accounted for nearly 90% of his production. How can anyone think that one catch makes him a WR1? Entering the season he was ranked #30 on your WR list. I would say that at best he can be upgraded to a WR2, but I think we need to pump the brakes on Garcon a little bit

    • In all fairness I do have him as a WR2. He also had 4 catches early in the game before getting injured. I am all for tempering expectations, but it is hard to argue that he looked good and has a rapport with RG3.

      • Nick Tenaglia says:

Sorry I thought you were calling him a WR1, but as I re-read the comments you do say “nearly a WR1.” Maybe I’m just not a Garcon fan and think that he has been over-hyped for a long time, but despite Week 1′s performance, I still see him as a risky play, and a great “Sell High” candidate at this point in the season.

  4. Lambda says:

Would you start Jennings if he’s able to go tonight or fill in w/Mcluster? Tks.

  5. Sean B says:

    Tough choices here. need 2.
V Jackson, D Jackson, Welker, Ogletree and Britt.

    • I would definitely go Welker.

The second comes down to if DeSean Jackson is healthy or not. If he plays, I’d go him, otherwise Vincent Jackson.

I want to recommend Britt, but word is he’ll be on a snap count this week. Come next week he will probably be a must own option.

  6. Beats66 says:

    I have a huge dilemma!
    Schaub vs jags
    or
    Stafford vs niners

    Help!

  7. Joey V says:

i have vincent jackson, antonio brown, decker, welker, desean jackson, and gronkowski. it is a ppr league, and i need to start three. i am definitely starting gronk, but i am still undecided and the other two, especially with welker’s last game, who should i start?

    • With Revis out for the Jets Brown gets a slight bump up, so he would be on my list.

The rest are all close, but I have a feeling the Patriots are going to make a concerted effort to get Welker involved, so he would be my second choice.

The order of the others, if need bem is Decker, V. Jackson, D. Jackson (you have more than enough depth not to take the risk on the injureD)

  8. Mike Warren says:

I am thinking of proposing this trade:

I give Megatron and Trent Richardson and I will get Victor Cruz Alfred Morris and Demarco Murray…

Do you think the other guy will accept the trade and do you think it’s a smart move on my part?

    Here’s my lineup:

    Eli Manning
    Matt Forte
    Trent Richardson
    Kevin Smith
    Laurent Robinson
    Calvin Johnson
    Vincent Jackson
    Vernon Davis

    Thanks!

    • I know where you are trying to go with the trade, I am just always hesitant to move someone like Calvin Johnson. I don’t think I would do it with Richardson, especially with Forte’s injury.

Do you have a FLEX spot? If you do, and you will be able to use Forte/Richardson/Murray later in the year, I would consider it…

  9. Mike W says:

OR Should I give Kevin Smith/Megatron

  10. Triz says:

Okay! So, unless Calvin Johnson is poorly or Ryan Mathews finishes recovering, I am set at WR and RB (going by your rankings).

    WR: Johnson and Percy Harvin
RB: CJ Spiller and Ahmad Bradshaw.

The question is flex! My top four picks are all pretty close in your rankings. These are: Jonathan Dwyer, Steve Johnson, Antonio Brown, Donald Brown (plus possibly Mathews, I just don’t know).

Any thoughts? I keep hearing Antonio Brown could have a good week with the Yets defense weak, but then again the Bills have lost David Nelson. I do not know at all!

    Thanks!!

    • Triz says:

      lol “Yets”

    • hahahaha…Yets :)

It is really a matter of choice. If Mathews is playing (and word is he’s not on a snap count), he’s the man to go with.

If not, Johnson and Brown are extremely close. I’d lean towards Johnson still, though.

      • Triz says:

oh wait, Antonio Brown or Donald Brown?

          • Triz says:

            :)

            thanks again!

          • Triz says:

Thanks for the great advice! I followed your suggestion and went with Stevie, yay!

So my boyfriend is enraged because he has both Jennings, Fred Jackson and Mendenhall. He is thinking about dropping Jackson since it’s going to be at least a few weeks until he’s back. This is stupid, right?

But if I can’t talk him out of it, should I propose a trade? With Mathews out I’m already a little light at RB so I probably wouldn’t be able to give him an RB, and obviously not Megatron or CJ Spiller or Gronkowski, but something reasonable. What do you think?

          • Ummm…yes, dropping Jackson would be a mistake.

If he is willing to give u Jackson for next to nothing, y not, but I wouldn’t go out of my way. While I wouldn’t drop him, the way Spiller is going Jackson may not come back to too many touches.

  11. Double G says:

Which one would you pick for a FLEX spot in a PPR league?

Shonn Greene, Jonathan Dwyer, or Dwayne Bowe

  12. charlie7410 says:

Need 1 wr to fill wr3 spot in non ppr 6 pts for td 12 team league.

    Darius heywardbey vs NO
    Brandon lafell@ mia
    Laurent robinson vs Hou
    Titus Young@ SF

  13. Luc says:

Need 1 wr for the wr3 spot.

Anquan Boldin, Sidney Rice, Brandon Lafell

  14. Roll Tide says:

Got one spot for Malcom Floyd, Brandon Lloyd, Antonoio Brown, Marcus Colston and Torrey Smith – who gets it.

    Thanks in advance!

  15. I have Colston, Brown, Lloyd and Smith within five spots of each other on the rankings (in this order), so it’s extremely close.

Without Darrelle Revis, I would give Brown a bump and go with him with Colston being a very close second choice.
