Many people expected Kevin Smith to get off to a good start to the season, and he did deliver. He rushed the ball 13 times for 62 yards and a touchdown, while also catching 4 passes for 29 yards and another TD. With many teams likely hurting at running back, partially due to the injuries to Fred Jackson and Matt Forte, would now be a good time to try and cash in on a little of the Smith hype? The answer is almost certainly yes.
Considering that you likely drafted as a depth option, you should have enough other options to jettison Smith and strengthen your team elsewhere.
Before you wonder why I would recommend dealing him, keep a few things in mind:
1) Mikel Leshoure is going to return in Week 3 and you would have to think that the Lions want to finally get something out of the early draft pick they used on him. That should eat into Smith’s carries.
2) At some point Jahvid Best could return as well, another potential player who could take away a few carries per game.
3) Smith is always going to be an injury risk. His history tells us that.
4) Led by Matthew Stafford, the Lions are going to be a pass first team. Yes, Simth will get some targets, but guys like Calvin Johnson, Titus Young and Brandon Pettigrew will likely play much bigger roles on a weekly basis.
As it is, you probably aren’t using Smith in a nearly impossible matchup against the 49ers this week. That said, a Week 3 matchup against the Titans is going to be extremely appealing, so benching him this week and using him in Week 3 would not be a bad strategy. Of course, you also the risk a potential injury (you never really know) and the presence of Leshoure eating into his touches and production if you postpone shopping him.
Depending on who else you have, it makes sense to at least reach out to a team that lost one of their starters early on this season. You may be able to get them to make a knee jerk reaction and improve yourself in another area. If not, keep your fingers crossed that you get another impressive performance from him in Week 3. After that, he definitely becomes trade bait.
What are your thoughts of Smith? Is he a player you would trade? Why or why not?
