Depending on the depth/scoring in your format, you had to daft Matthew Stafford in the first or second round this year. At this point he obviously has not lived up to that type of investment. Sure, he has thrown for 585 yards, but he has also has just 2 TD and 4 INT crippling his value.
The question facing fantasy owners is if now is the time to try and buy him, or are we already primed to write him off for 2012?
I have an extremely hard time believing the latter and would highly recommend trying to get him at below market value. Yes, he threw 3 interceptions against the Rams, but that defense also held Robert Griffin III to just over 200 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT in Week 2. Could they simply be better than we expected against the pass?
Even if they aren’t, we should all be willing to write off a 3 interception game. This past week we saw it from both Eli and Peyton Manning and is anyone running away from either of them?
In Week 2 Stafford faced the San Francisco 49ers, and we all know about their defense. In other words, we shouldn’t be panicking over his performance over the first two weeks. As it is, with nearly 600 yards throwing would anyone believe that he hadn’t thrown more than 1 TD pass in a game quite yet? That becomes even more unthinkable when you consider that Calvin Johnson is his main weapon. You just know that the combination is going to start finding the end zone early and often.
You also have to look at his upcoming schedule:
- Week 3 – Tennessee Titans (who have allowed 5 passing TD over the first two weeks)
- Week 4 – Minnesota Vikings (who he torched for 605 yards, 4 TD and 0 INT in two games in 2011)
Would it surprise anyone if, in two weeks time, we are talking about Stafford as one of the elite QB in the league once again?
Matchups have been part of it, as has an inability of his wide receivers to take it to the house despite amassing yards and an overall shaky first game. However, this offense is too high-powered to think that the aren’t going to get things into gear. If you can get him at a discount now I wouldn’t hesitate, because this could easily be your last chance to do so.
What are your thoughts of Stafford? Is he a player you are targeting or ignoring?
