Week 5 Rankings: Top 25 Quarterbacks

Can you believe that the NFL season is already 25% behind us?  In other words, fantasy owner’s patience is likely quickly running out.  If you don’t make a move now, time could quickly run out on your season.  With that in mind, let’s kick off our Week 5 rankings by taking a look at the quarterbacks:

  1. Matt Ryan – Atlanta Falcons – at Washington
  2. Tom Brady – New England Patriots – vs. Denver
  3. Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers – at Indianapolis
  4. Robert Griffin III – Washington Redskins – vs. Atlanta
  5. Drew Brees – New Orleans Saints – vs. San Diego
  6. Eli Manning – New York Giants – vs. Cleveland
  7. Cam Newton – Carolina Panthers – vs. Seattle
  8. Peyton Manning – Denver Broncos – at New England
  9. Joe Flacco – Baltimore Ravens – at Kansas City
  10. Andy Dalton – Cincinnati Bengals – vs. Miami
  11. Philip Rivers – San Diego Chargers – at New Orleans
  12. Ben Roethlisberger – Pittsburgh Steelers – vs. Philadelphia
  13. Michael Vick – Philadelphia Eagles – at Pittsburgh
  14. Christian Ponder – Minnesota Vikings – vs. Tennessee
  15. Jay Cutler – Chicago Bears – at Jacksonville
  16. Matt Schaub – Houston Texans – at New York Jets
  17. Ryan Fitzpatrick – Buffalo Bills – at San Francisco
  18. Andrew Luck – Indianapolis Colts – vs. Green Bay
  19. Alex Smith – San Francisco 49ers – vs. Buffalo
  20. Matt Hasselbeck – Tennessee Titans – at Minnesota
  21. Ryan Tannehill – Miami Dolphins – at Cincinnati
  22. Matt Cassel – Kansas City Chiefs – vs. Baltimore
  23. Sam Bradford – St. Louis Rams – vs. Arizona
  24. Russell Wilson – Seattle Seahawks – at Carolina
  25. Brandon Weedon – Cleveland Browns – at New York Giants

  • Matt Ryan is coming off a big Week 4 (369 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT), has already thrown for 1,162 yards and 11 TD and is taking on a Washington defense that is among the worst in the league.  They are one of two teams allowing over 300 passing yards per game (along with Tampa Bay) and have allowed a league high 11 passing touchdowns.  It is impossible not to consider him the top quarterback in the league right now.
  • It was another good week for Eli Manning, who threw for 309 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT against a tough Eagles defense.  If Hakeem Nicks is healthy and back in the lineup (that’s a big question mark at this point), things would look that much better.  However, the Browns are in the bottom five in the league in passing yards allowed (286.0 yards) and have also yielded 9 TD.  Look for Manning and company to continue to roll.
  • While the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t allowing many passing yards per game, they have allowed 10 TD vs. just 2 INT.  With that in mind, do we really think they can slow down Joe Flacco and company?  Flacco is currently third in the league in yards, with 1,269, to go along with 7 TD.  He’s a must start option at this point and likely to put up another big week no matter who the defense is.
  • Andy Dalton has quickly emerged as a must start fantasy option, as his rapport with A.J. Green gets better and better every week.  Against a Dolphins defense allowing just under 300 passing yards per game (297.8), don’t expect him to slow down.
  • You have to like what Christian Ponder has done this season, and he also has a very favorable matchup against the Tennessee Titans.  That said he is coming off a week where he threw for just 111 yards and 0 TD showing us how inconsistent he can be.  Consider him a high-level QB2, but it is still tough to trust him.
  • Matt Schaub should make plays against the Jets, especially without Darrelle Revis in the lineup.  However, they could just as easily stick to what they do best, which is running the football.  That makes him a questionable option.
  • I know Ryan Tannehill threw for 431 yards in Week 4, but does anyone really expect a repeat performance?  Don’t overvalue him based on one week.

  1. Randy says:

I am jumping the gun a bit (need WR advice for free agency tonight), but as long as Nicks and Jennings are out, how do you compare the value in standard leagues for Hixson and James Jones vs guys like Hartline, Simpson, or Hankerson? Could you maybe rank them for week five and ROS? Thanks!

  2. Matt says:

Who should I start at QB this week, Andrew Luck or Kevin Kolb? Stafford has a bye for me. I’m guessing based off your rankings I should start Luck? I don’t see Kolb on your list

  3. Torch says:

RG3 for Jimmy Graham straight up? TE Bennett is sitting on the bench, Rudolph is highest available on waivers. Currently rotating low end QB1/ high QB2 as starters. PPR league. 2-2 to start season, Ponder’ll likely start this week over Fitzpatrick without a deal for a high end QB1.

  4. Matt – I don’t love either, but I would g Luck in what could be a shootout.

Torch – if I were getting RGIII I would definitely do it, then grab Rudolph off waivers.

  5. Paul Partyka says:

    Hey Professor,

I have the worst matchups and byes this week so I am torn on 2 choices. At qb and rb. First of all I nabbed Ryan Williams off the wire, should I roll with him over spiller? Or are there any other running backs you recommend to get over Williams. Its a 12 team league so most of the waiver wire is garbage these days. Also Im having nightmares about Vick this week. Is he still a better option than Kolb or Ponder or any other qb? Both are on the wire.

    Thanks for the insight!

    • I love Williams this week (perhaps too much so), so he definitely is the one I’d use. Spiller’s role is still a bit unknown, making him a risk.

To me, Vick/Ponder is a coin flip. I wouldn’t blame you for using Ponder this week.

  6. J.Death says:

Andy Dalton or Ben Roethlisberger this week? I like Dalton’s matchup but also think there will be some scoring in PIT vs PHL game.

  7. joseph says:

ok…Flacco has been doing well but like last week proved, when I sit cam he hits 30+!!!! I see the rating’s but I have to ask, cam with legs and TE or Flacco with smith vs. the chiefs?

  8. Paul Partyka says:

Well you did me in again Rotoprofessor. Went with Ryan Williams and that putrid offensive line. Got me a grand total of 4 points. With my other brutal match ups this week, Im gonna need a miracle! lol.
