Thoughts:

  • It was a surprisingly down week for Arian Foster, rushing the ball 17 times for just 29 yards (though he did manage to score 2 TD).  That said does anyone expect him not to bounce back against a Ravens defense that enters the week allowing 136.5 rushing yards per game (and 7 TD) and now has to go forward without Ray Lewis?  In his last meeting with Baltimore (2011 playoffs) he torched them for 132 yards and 1 TD.
  • Chris Johnson has had a tough schedule and struggled early, yet has rushed for over 90 yards in two of the past three games.  Is he the same player he once was?  Of course not, but he draws the league’s worst rushing defense in Week 7 (173.5 yards per game, 9 TD).  In other words Johnson has restored his status as a RB1, at least for one week.
  • We’ll have to monitor the news all week to make sure Trent Richardson is healthy, but after seeing Shonn Greene demolish the Colts on the ground (161 yards, 3 TD) it is impossible not to consider him among the top options this week.
  • When it comes to Greene this week, does anyone really believe he is going to be able to come remotely close to that success?  Eventually, the Jets are going to have to pass the ball, especially against a Patriots team that could cause them to try to play catch-up.  Besides that, does one big game really erase his early struggles?  He looks better, but it’s still hard to consider him a “good” option.
  • The San Francisco 49ers are considered one of the best rushing defenses in the league, yet Ahmad Bradshaw torched them in Week 6 (116 yards, 1 TD).  A lot of that had to do with the team sticking with the run (27 carries), however.  Marshawn Lynch draws them this week and he has had success against the 49ers in the past (107 yards and 1 TD in his last matchup), so don’t completely write him off.  However, I would anticipate the 49ers coming out with something to prove.  Consider Lynch more of a RB2, especially considering he also tossed up a dud in Week 1 of 2011 (13 carries for 33 yards).
  • Speaking of Bradshaw, after two big weeks it will be interesting to see how many carries he gets against a Redskins defense that is among the worst against the pass.  With Eli Manning at the helm, don’t think Bradshaw is a lock to produce big once again.
  • C.J. Spiller was the more impressive back in Week 6 and is the more explosive option among the Bills RB duo.  He would be a Top 5 option if it was clear that he was going to be the lead back, but since he’s in a timeshare he has to be bumped down the rankings due to risk.  That said, if I owned him I’d be playing him this week unless you were loaded with alternatives.
  • While Doug Martin hasn’t been great, he did have a nice game with 13 carries for 76 yards (as well as 2 receptions for 55 yards) in Week 6.  Taking on a Saints’ defense that has not performed against the run, look for him to have another strong week.
  • Alex Green got 22 carries in Week 6, albeit in a blowout.  That said, he has an easier matchup and should again get to get the bulk of the carries.  He’s going to be a viable RB2.
  • Felix Jones looked good and, assuming DeMarco Murray can’t go, he should have another strong performance.  Monitor the news, but as a RB2 he’s well worth playing.
  • Jonathan Stewart or DeAngelo Williams?  That question keeps them both as FLEX options.

  1. Randy says:

In a league where I have McFadden, Ridley, Morris, BJGE, Ben Tate and Daryl Richardson, would you drop Tate or perhaps Richardson to get Goodson as DMC’s handcuff, or just stick with what I have? Thanks!

    • I think we covered the Tate question in another thread. Richardson is more droppable, but could have an opportunity to make some waves later in the year (if Jackson can’t get going).

Any chance of doing a package trade than drabbing Goodson?

  2. Steve says:

William Powell, Alex Green, F-Jax, and Hardesty. Must choose two to start along Arian Foster. Which two?

According to your rankings, Powell and Green are the choices even with Powell vs MIN? Wouldn’t F-Jax vs TEN be a better matchup play? Just wondering. Thanks!

  3. Nemo says:

I’m struggling at RB this week. I have F Jax, Leshoure, Mendenhall, Morris, Sproles. Two questions 1) I have the option of only playing 2 backs but playing 2 TE’s and I have Graham and Hernandez. Do I go Morris and Mendenhall then go Graham and Hernandez? Or do I Go Morris Mendenhall Sproles and just Graham? 2) Do I drop F Jax for Greene?

  4. Steve – I could see using Jackson, but he is going to have his touches limited by C.J. Spiller (and you always run the risk of Spiller getting the bulk of the carries if he is producing significantly better). That’s the reasoning behind the spot on the rankings.

Nemo – I wouldn’t trust Greene (assuming Shonn) so no, I wouldn’t do that. As for which to play, is it PPR? Standard scoring?

  5. Tommay says:

    Hey Professor,

I have been offered Antonio Brown and Jermaine Gresham for Torrey smith in a non-ppr league. I have a surplus of wrs right now and my best TE is tamme, so I think its a good trade. Thoughts?

    My Wrs:

Harvin, A.Johnson, Torrey Smith, Kenny Britt, Brandon Lloyd

  6. Brenden says:

Have Forte, Spiller, Morris on roster and not sure which combo to use for RB1 and RB2..judging by your rankings it’s a close call and a good situation. Is Morris more of a sure bet than Forte, or is Forte back? And is Spiller worth starting over either considering the split touches?

  7. Triz says:

So I guess I’ll be going with Spiller and Bradshaw at RB and Calvin Johnson and Hervin at WR, but what about flex? Stevie Johnson, Fred Jackson or Antonio Brown? I know you usually say go RB …

    Thanks!

  8. Tyler says:

Struggling to figure out what to do this week: BJGE, Felix Jones, Vick Ballard, and Domenik Hixon? Pick two.

    Thanks!

  9. Jason says:

I have mikel leshoure, michael bush, vick ballard, donnie avery

who do I put in for rb1, rb2, and flex?

I have j.charles, l.mccoy, and d. thomas on bye this week.

  10. Mike says:

Based on your rankings I’m starting Spiller and F. Jones. For my flex I’m unsure if I should start F-Jax, Ballard or Hixon…

  11. Paul says:

Do I start Morris or Sproles?

  12. Tommay – If you don’t need Brown, I’d probably shoot higher than Gresham.

Brenden – Yea, that’s an enviable situation so I would say go with your gut. I would probably go Forte & Spiller, because Morris does have a potentially tough matchup (and Spiller should be productive as long as he gets 15+ touches). That said, I don’t think you can go wrong.

Triz – It’s not a hard and fast rule, just a general thought process. I would actually pick between Johnson and Brown, with Johnson having the edge for me. It’s close, but Jackson could lose too many touches to Spiller to trust him.

Tyler – I’d go Jones & BJGE since Nicks appears to be healthy (hurting Hixon’s value)

Jason – Tough situation. I’d definitely play Leshoure & Ballard. For the FLEX, go with your gut, but I’d lean towards Avery.

Mike – Tough, but for me it’s a tossup between Jackson & Ballard. I’d lean Jackson, but go with your gut.

  13. donna says:

I have shonn green, cj spiller, &frank gore. which 2 should i play

  14. Stacy says:
