How should fantasy owners view struggling quarterbacks like Cam Newton, Michael Vick or Matthew Stafford in Week 8? How do tough match-ups impact some of the better options like Robert Griffin III and Eli Manning? Which under-the-radar option do you want to consider? Let’s try to answer all the questions and more:
- Peyton Manning – Denver Broncos – vs. New Orleans
- Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers – vs. Jacksonville
- Drew Brees – New Orleans Saints – at Denver

- Matt Ryan – Atlanta Falcons – at Philadelphia
- Tom Brady – New England Patriots – at St. Louis
- Eli Manning – New York Giants – at Dallas
- Andrew Luck – Indianapolis Colts – at Tennessee
- Cam Newton – Carolina Panthers – at Chicago
- Tony Romo – Dallas Cowboys – vs. New York Giants
- Philip Rivers – San Diego Chargers – at Cleveland
- Matthew Stafford – Detroit Lions – vs. Seattle
- Michael Vick – Philadelphia Eagles – vs. Atlanta
- Jay Cutler – Chicago Bears – vs. Carolina
- Christian Ponder – Minnesota Vikings – vs. Tampa Bay

- John Skelton – Arizona Cardinals – vs. San Francisco
Thoughts:
- It’s become clear that the Saints defense simply doesn’t scare anyone, hasn’t it? Josh Freeman torched them for 420 yards and 3 TD in Week 7, and the Saints are now one of three teams to be allowing over 300 passing yards per game. Throw in 12 TD allowed and it’s extremely hard not to like Peyton Manning this week. Manning has been playing well as it is, averaging 328.5 yards over his past four games to go along with 11 TD and 1 INT.
- Robert Griffin III could have problems throwing the ball against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but we all know his ability to rush the football is going to keep him among the top options in the league. He’s become one of the few players who don’t get downgraded based on their matchup alone.
- Eli Manning has proven to be one of the elite QB in the league, but the Cowboys should prove to be a tough challenge. Manning struggled the first time around in ’12, throwing for 213 yards and 1 TD. However, he’s been significantly better since then and the Giants have proven that they can move the ball against anyone. While he’s downgraded a little bit from most weeks, he should remain a QB1 in all formats.
- The last time Philip Rivers was on the football field he had a miserable night, but there is every reason to think that he is going to come back strong in Week 8. A match-up with a Browns defense that has allowed 15 passing TD tends to do that. Remember, Joe Haden is back so things could be significantly different then the first few weeks. That just keeps Rivers in check.
- Does anyone truly trust Michael Vick at this point, especially against a defense that has 10 INT on the season? Vick has been a turnover machine and it is hard to consider him a QB1 until he proves otherwise.
- Early word had Jake Locker returning to action for Week 8, but that ultimately does not appear to be the case.
- Will Matthew Stafford ever get things fully on track? You have to think that, sooner or later, he and Calvin Johnson are going to get on the same page and start making big plays. This week may not be the week, with a tough match-up against the Seahawks, but fantasy owners would be best served to stay patient.

I have Matt Ryan as my starter, and Palmer as backup, who I really only needed this past weekend due to Ryan’s bye. Would you drop Palmer at this point to make room for additional players elsewhere at RB/WR, or is the risk of not carrying a backup too great due to injury potential? It might be hard to answer w/o knowing my entire roster or who else is a free agent, but just in general, what would your approach be?
Also, who do you like more w/ Nate Burleson out for the year? Brian Hartline or Titus Young (non-PPR)… Thanks again!
I think you may be selling Weedon short. Over the last three weeks, he has averaged 262yds, 2TDs and 1INT (6/3 total). This week he is going up against one of the easiest pass D’s in the NFL, SD (25th passing yards, 27th passing tds, 27th sacks, 11th ints). Why no love for Weedon?
Who would you keep?
hakeem nicks or larry fitzgerald
Randy – It really depends who else is on waivers. If there is someone you can pick up easily, I have no problem going without a backup (I am doing the same thing in one league). It just depends on what else is out there. As for the WR question, I would stick with Hartline (though stashing Young would be nice). He just hasn’t shown enough to trust while Hartline is his team’s top receiver.
fiji.siv – He has been playing well, but it is still tough for me to trust given his receiving corps. There is still a lot of risk, but I can understand bumping him up a few spots. Regardless, he’s a QB2.
Jay – I think I’d go Nicks, but it’s close.
Hey Professor, so do you think it would be a better bet starting Romo over Cutler? The Giant’s defense has been looking pretty good, while Carolina’s hasn’t.
True, but the Giants secondary still has holes and Romo showed what he could do against them on Week 1. Throw in the potential lack of a running game (while Cutler has Forte), and. Would lean towards Romo (but it’s close)
I forgot that I had Michael Vick on my bench, and the ESPN fantasy QB rankings have Vick ranked right above Romo. I know that the Falcons are ranked second in Int/TDs allowed, so would you start Vick over Romo this week? Thanks for your time and advice Professor.
I can’t trust Vick right now give what he has done this season. I would still g Romo
I have Philip rivers and cam newton but big Ben is available.
For this week Roethlisberger is by far the best option, though I wouldn’t drop one of the other two for him.
