According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe (via Twitter):
“Maybe 30-40 snaps? RT hey Ben, what do u think about Zach Sudfeld? Will he start Sunday?”
In an article from Kevin Clark for The Wall Street Journal (click here for the article), heading into Week 17 last season the Patriots were averaging 74.4 players per game.
Obviously you would think limited snaps would limit his fantasy appeal. At the same time, does anyone really think that he’s not going to be on the field in obvious passing downs or in the red zone?
Maybe he isn’t utilized as an every down tight end, but the Patriots have long had an offense that uses the position and there is no reason to think that’s going to change. Until Rob Gronkowski returns Sudfeld should be the top receiving option at tight end for the team, and that’s a good spot to be in.
Is he a TE1 this week? You could argue the fact, though there is risk involved. I would consider him a high-end TE2 (or low-end TE1) with upside and not use this news as a reason to avoid him.
What about you? What type of production do you expect from Sudfeld in Week 1?
