The 2013 first round draft pick was recently quoted by Mike Garafalo of Fox Sports (click here for the article) saying:
“My problem is I’m coming from Wisconsin, a power school, and I had 900 carries in four years. Whenever I was out on the field, I was getting the ball a majority of the time,” Ball told FOX Sports this week. “But with this offense and No. 18…”
It’s hard to expect significant production from Ball, at least early on, as he will share touches with Ronnie Hillman and Knowshon Moreno. Could the team ride the hot hand? Absolutely. Will that be Ball? Who knows…
Plus, we all know that an offense that has Peyton Manning, Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and Wes Welker is going to be pass heavy. The number of carries is going to be limited as it is, so when you are splitting it between three backs the upside has to be limited.
Consider Ball more of a mid/low level FLEX option this week, but one that could eventually grow in value as he earns more and more touches. In reality, unless I’m desperate, I’m leaving Ball on my bench due to the risk. Unfortunately Week 1 just isn’t the week to gamble.
Yesterday we had a nice debate here regarding Ball vs. the Bengals’ Giovani Bernard. Considering the quote from Ball, I wouldn’t hesitate to use Bernard over Ball in Week 1.
How about you? What are your thoughts on Ball this week? Would you use him over Bernard?
