Week 3 Rankings (2013): Top 50 Wide Receivers

by Will Overton

Injuries are starting to throw a wrench into things now and it’ll get even more interesting when bye weeks start. Right now we have a few guys banged up such as Larry Fitzgerald and Roddy White who we’re pretty sure are playing, but that means we need to decide whether to use them at less then 100%.

  • Part of it is injuries, but I think Victor Cruz has legitimately moved into the top five this week. Cruz has gone over 100 yards in both games this season and I think he’ll do it again this week. Carolina hasn’t allowed a ton of points, but teams are completing 72% of their passes against them and they’ve given up 587 yards total through the air. I think Cruz tears through them this week for a big game.
  • So far the Chiefs have only allowed one TD through the air and Brandon Flowers is no joy to be matched up with. Those are the only things keeping DeSean Jackson out of the top 10, because he has certainly been playing like a top 10 receiver. Even with the bad matchup I like Jackson as a low end WR1 this week without question. As long as Vick is healthy I am all in on Jackson.
  • Concussions are funny things and they can be giant pains to fantasy owners. The news on Andre Johnson is good so far, but things can change quick with head injuries and there are a lot of hoops to jump through to get back on the field. If Johnson plays he’s probably going to be near 100% and so he’ll be a #1 receiver. You need to keep an eye on the injury report though. If he doesn’t go, De’Andre Hopkins gets bumped up another five or six slots on this list.
  • If you think that week one was a fluke because Anquan Boldin was shut down by Richard Sherman last week, your wrong. Really the true Boldin is somewhere between these two performances, he’s a decent WR2 who will regularly rank anywhere from 15 – 25. Mike Wallace had a big game against the Colts last week and I think Boldin will put up similar numbers. Kaepernick is still a great quarterback and Boldin is still his favorite target.
  • Another guy who has shown us two very different performances this season is James Jones who torched Washington last week after doing literally nothing in week one. Cincinnati has a nice defense and even though Jones blew up last week we can’t overreact. He’s still the third option on the Packers team and he’s probably still a WR3 or flex play in fantasy too.
  • I’m not sure we’re going to see the Rams throw the football 55 times again like they did trying to play catch up with Atlanta last week. Still I think they could end up in a shootout with Dallas this week and if someone is going to lose targets it won’t be Chris Givens or Tavon Austin who both look like legitimately usable third receivers in fantasy. I don’t think Austin is a goal line threat just because he had 2 TD’s, but he’s proving he can be a useful fantasy option.
  • I was willing to write off week one for Lance Moore as a bad first game, but now I’m a little worried about him. Neither Tampa Bay nor Atlanta has particularly good pass coverage, so the fact that Moore has only a combined 3 catches on 8 targets is very concerning. This week the Saints get the Cardinals who are pretty average in their coverage, but I just don’t have much faith. I think Moore is still the second option at receiver, but Drew Brees seems much more content throwing to Jimmy Graham or Darren Sproles then Moore right now.
  • This week marks the season debut of Josh Gordon for Cleveland. Gordon and Weeden were building a nice little partnership last season, but a suspension has forced Gordon out of this season’s first two games. I am a big fan of Gordon and think he should be added in all leagues he’s not owned in. That said, I need to see Gordon on the field before I can push him up this list much higher than this.

  1. Isaac says:

i have demariyus welker and decker should i start them all or is peyton going to focus on the running game

  2. Corey says:

I’m worried about Brandon Marshall this week against Pitt. Especially after they shut down AJ Green. Do I stick with his proven points or do I take a chance on Steve Smith or Marlon Brown? My gut is telling me to stick with Marshall.

  3. Will Overton says:

Isaac – I could see a blowout limiting Decker. Who else do you have?

Corey – You gotta stick with Marshall. I moved down a few spots, but he’s still a must start.

  4. ddschmidt says:

I have Desean Jackson, Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe, and Julian Edelman and have 2 WR slots and a Flex. I am feeling the two Jackson’s at the two WR positions, but am having trouble between Bowe and Edelman. Any thoughts?

    • Generally I would say Edelman, but I am a big fan of Bowe’s matchup this week. Edelman could get a lot of targets, but there’s no guarantee that he’s going to turn them into big results (see Week 2).

I’d leave Edelman on the bench this week.

  5. eric says:

Roto, As a #3 Edelman or Stevie Johnson?

  6. l says:

My WR3 spot is a choice between De’Andre Hopkins, Cecil Shorts, and Josh Gordon. I feel pretty confident in going with De’Andre Hopkins and especially so if Andre Johnson isn’t a go, but are there any optimistic reasons to think that Cecil Shorts or Josh Gordon could greatly out perform him b/c I don’t even know who’ll be throwing to those two other guys this week… C.Henne and someone with the last name Hoyer?

  7. Jawad says:

For my flex position I have so many options:
    RB: DeAngelo Williams, Daryl Richardson
    WR: Antonio Brown, Eddie Royal
TE: Jermichael Finley (J. Cameron starting)

    Any ideas?

  8. eric – I’d go with Stevie Johnson, though it’s close

l – I agree, I’d go Hopkins. Tough to trust the other two.

Jawad – It’s close, but I think I’d go Williams or Finley.

  9. Shawn says:

Mike Wallace, Steve Smith, Garcon. I need two, seems like a toss up due to match-up and last week output.

  10. Bryan says:

Roto- Would you trade Stafford, Roddy and Trent for Vick, Cruz and J. bell? Ppr league and I’m not doing so well. My other starters are Gore, decker, Wayne, and Daryl Richardson

  11. Alan says:

Rotoprofessor, I have Dez Bryant, Jordy Nelson, Marques Colston, Reggie Wayne and Josh Gordon and 2 TEs: Jordan Cameron and Antony Gates.
Someone just dropped Danny Amendola; I really want to pick him up but really don’t know who should I drop to move foward. Can you help me?

  12. Bryan – I wouldn’t, especially with Vick being an injury risk, Bell not a starter and Richardson now being in a place to thrive.

Alan – Yeah, that’s a tough one. Is there any other spare parts on your roster? Otherwise it’s got t be Gordon…

  13. Griffin says:

I’ve just been offered Anquan Boldin and Steven Jackson for Eddie Royal

My teams looks like this at the moment:

    QBs: RG3, Sam Bradford
    RBs: D. Martin, S. Ridley, G. Bernard, E. Lacy
WRs: D. Bryant, TY Hilton, D. Amendola, M. Williams, E. Royal
TEs: Julius Thomas, J. Cook, J. Cameron

I’m worried about who I’d drop to take on Steven Jackson.

  14. jim says:

    Flex position. Bowe or Witten

  15. Cara says:

Im hurting in the WR position. Fitz is my number one and Antonio Brown my number two. Chris Givens is on my bench and I just dumped Kenny Britt and picked up Marion Brown. We do have 12 teams. Play A.Brown this week? Take a chance on the other Brown? Thanks!!

  16. Mike A says:

    Hi Professor Roto –

2 questions if I may… I’m in a standard league- who to start for my 2 rbs? Trent Richardson (will he play this week with the colts?), J Bell from detroit, Darren Sproles, and Ben Tate. I’ve been leaning on Richardson and Bell, but now with the trade, unsure for this week to pair Bell with Sproles. Also for a flex WR/RB – I have Eddie Royal, Eric Decker or one of the leftover rbs not starting. I have Royal in that spot now… Thanks for your wisdom in advance

  17. jim – That’s incredibly close, but I’d actually lean Bowe this week I think.

Cara – I’d roll with Antonio. There’s been talk of him doing some complaining and that tends to get a WR targeted early and often the next week.

Mike A – At worst Richardson is probably going to split carries, so I wouldn’t shy away from him. As for the FLEX, I would actually go Sproles. No way Royal keeps up his production from the first two weeks and Sproles has a higher upside.

  18. jim says:

Thanks Roto for the info. I just picked up Knowson on the waiver wire. Should I start him over Bowe as a Flex.

  19. John says:

Who should be my flex this week: Edelman, James Jones or Torrey Smith? I’m leaning towards Edelman because of guaranteed targets, but unsure.

  20. Steve says:

    Flex question! PPR league.

Options: David Wilson, Steve Smith, Steve Johnson

    Thanks in advance.

  21. tommy says:

Which 3 should I start?! Torrey Smith, Marques Colston, Julian Edelman, Mike Wallace and Eddie Royle.

  22. Nemo says:

I’m really hurting in my WR’s in my one league (especially with Roddy basically a no play)…I’m stuck with Santana Moss as my 2nd WR! I’m 2-0 right now but with Roddy not getting healthy anytime soon do I drop Moss and pick up Roberts (it’s a 14 team league and there is NOTHING for WR’s)?
Also, in my other league I need to pick one between V. Jackson, Colston, Boldin and Hopkins. I know your rankings say V Jax but I’m worried about the NE match up…just need a vote of confidence I guess (unless one of the other 3 look better). Thanks guys!

  23. steven says:

I have peyton as my starter. Colin kapernack on my bench and i got offered aj green straight up for him. So i do it

  24. Jim says:

Who should I play in WR. Torrey Smith or Brian Hartline?

  25. Memo – Probably can’t go wrong with Colston either, but I like Jackson still.as for the other league, with Fitzgerald hurt I would go with Roberts.

Steven – As I said in the other post, if you need a WR (and actually probably regardless given the QB depth), I’d do it in a heartbeat

  26. Ryan says:

WR1 AJ Green is a must-start. WR2 right now is Antonio Brown and Flex is Stevie Johnson. I have Mike Wallace, Edelman, David Wilson (plan to sit) and Julius Thomas left (Graham is my starter). Who should I play at WR2 and Flex?
