Don’t we all just love running back committees? While the New York Jets are hardly the only team to employee a committee thus far in 2013, that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. Just look at these numbers and try to tell us who is the better back:
- Bilal Powell – 25 carries for 77 yards and 1 TD
- Chris Ivory – 22 carries for 67 yards
Powell has added six receptions for 57 yards, while being used in passing downs and goal line situations. I was a big proponent in drafting Powell late in your draft for this exact reason, though it doesn’t look like he’s going to get a stranglehold of the job any time soon, unfortunately.
In fact, if you saw the game last Thursday Ivory was the more impressive back in Week 2, appearing to run with a purpose. On 12 carries he amassed 52 yards and left people wondering why the Jets didn’t use him more than they did.
Of course, the fact that he gave way on the goal line is a major concern. Being taken off the field on third downs is one thing, but having touchdowns vultured away is another.
At this point there is no reason to think that this won’t remain almost an even carry split, hurting both of their values heading into a matchup with the Bills. Long-term I would expect Ivory to eventually take the lead, but who knows when that will be.
If there’s an owner in your league frustrated with the situation, see if you can cash in and buy Ivory for pennies on the dollar now. It could pay dividends come the second half. If you are looking for immediate help, this isn’t the situation to focus on. Right now the two are nothing more than FLEX options, depending on your other options, due to the timeshare.
