Week 5 Rankings (2013) – Top 50 Wide Receivers

by Will Overton

Some of the guy we thought would be regulars in the top 15 like Dwayne Bowe, Roddy White and Hakeem Nicks are hanging out in the mid 20′s these days. Meanwhile they have been replaced inside the top 20 by guys like Josh Gordon and Torrey Smith.

  • I’m expecting a big time pass happy shootout between the Giants and the Eagles. It’s why DeSean Jackson is still in my top ten after a couple of down weeks. It’s also why Hakeem Nicks cracked the top 25 this week despite his disappearing acts lately. If Nicks can’t put up double digit points against the Eagles this week it might be the last time he’s in the top 30 for a while.
  • Right now it is debatable as to who is more valuable between Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson in Green Bay. I personally lean towards Cobb, but all you need to know is that you want to use either of them this week and James Jones too if you have him. The Lions secondary is banged up and so is the Packers running game. That means Green Bay will be throwing and throwing often in what could be a high scoring game.
  • The bye week came at the right time for Steve Smith who has been trying to fight through a hip pointer injury. We haven’t heard an update on him, but if he’s cleared to go I think this could be a nice week for him. The Cardinals secondary isn’t bad, but they aren’t great either and I think Cam Newton is due for a big game. Despite the out of the blue games from guys like Ted Ginn Jr and Brandon LaFell, Smith is the still the man in Carolina and he’ll show it if he’s healthy.
  • Whether or not Danny Amendola plays will have a decent impact on these rankings. If he plays I think he becomes a borderline #2, definite #3 guy. If he doesn’t play though Julian Edelman creeps back into the top 30. The one guy who won’t be affected in my opinion is Kenbrell Thompkins who keeps getting better and should remain a mid level #3 all season in my opinion.
  • The idea scenario for the Jaguars this week would be to establish the run game against a sketchy run defense in St. Louis. However they could easily fall behind quickly again and be forced to throw and throw often. You can’t love Justin Blackmon on this team, but there’s no denying the Jags will be playing from behind a lot. Chances are Blackmon won’t find the end zone as much as we’d like, but he should put up pretty decent numbers most week which is why he moves right into the bottom tier of WR3’s his first week.
  • After a nice first week it looked like we might have been underestimating Miles Austin. His last two games though he has just 5 catches for 53 yards combined, then he had to sit out last week. Word is the Cowboys are hopeful he can go with week against Denver, which could be a good matchup as Dallas will likely be playing catchup just like every other team this season has. With the injury and the inconsistency though it’s hard to trust him, even in this matchup.
  • The Joe Haden effect is likely to effect the Bills just like it has every other team. If Stevie Johnson plays Haden will likely cover him, a bad mix for Johnson owners as he’s already slowed. If that happens though Robert Woods could still have a nice game. Non-Haden covered receivers have fared pretty well against the Browns this season and the connection between Woods and Manuel is growing.
  • It’s hard to figure out what will happen with the San Diego receivers. I expect Phillip Rivers to have a big game against Oakland, but all three receivers on this list are low end WR3 or flex plays at best. Part of it is because Antonio Gates and Danny Woodhead are such big factors in the passing game and part is because you never know which guy is going to have the nice game when.

  1. Me says:

I play in a PPR league, Wanna give some trade advice?

I Give: Stevie Johnson, Lamar Miller
    I Get: Larry Fitzgerald

My issue is that it would leave me very thin at RB, with only Reggie Bush, Sproles, Woodhead, and Wilson. Advice?

    • Tough call, but it’s not like Miller has been blowing things away and you can def. do well with Bush/Sproles in a PPR format.

      Is there a FLEX?

      • Me says:

Yes, our format is 3 WR, 2 RB, 2 Flex. My primary concern is that if/when Bush gets hurt again, any depth I may have had at RB is gone. I’m very deep at WR, and they are going to be my Flex plays any given week. But I do have to start 2 RB, and would like a little flexibility.

  2. James A says:

Would Rivers and Spiller be too much to give for Megatron? Newton is my other QB.

I’m thin at WR with Vjax being hurt and should be ok at RB with Peterson, Forte, Lacy and S-Jax

    • It is a little much, though with Spiller struggling the way he is it’s tough to argue. I don’t but into Rivers, so if you can turn him into Johnson it’s hard to turn it down,

  3. Andrew H says:

Hey roto 1 point ppr I need three Danny amadola, Julian eddilman, roddy white, Stevie Johnson. I can also drop miles austin and pick up tavon austin. Thx for the help.

  4. Mike says:

I need a WR but not for this week. Who should I pick up from the free agents. I can only pick one
    Harvin
    Britt
    Holmes
    Hills
    Broyles
    Moore

    Thanks!

    • If it’s not something you need, Harvin is the best to stash

      • Mike says:

Great! Thanks. Is there any time table yet? I can’t find any recent info for his return

        • I haven’t seen a set date, but have heard he’s ahead of schedule but who knows.

What’s the timing of when you’d need someone?

          • Mike says:

No imminent date but I need a decent WR. I have Thomas, Jackson n edleman. I picked up Britt just incase they showcase him. I’m hoping a trade from TEN is coming soon.

Harvin I read is still in NYC rehabbing and he could be back by week 12. No one us updating his timetable.
            -thank you!

  5. StanCal says:

I’m the disappointed and crippled owner of both C.J. Spiller and Roddy White. Given their hobbled play and viable alternatives for their respective teams (Fred Jackson and Julio Jones/just about every Atlanta receiver), when/do these two players regain fantasy relevancy this season?

    • I actually wouldn’t be surprised if White gets there on Monday, but we’ll talk about that more over the weekend. As for Spiller, he showed he still had that burst last night and with 10 days between games hopefully the Bills finally figure things out.

Week 6 could be your coming out party (finally)

  6. Cara says:

I have Fitz going. Do I put in an injured M. Brown or Chris Givens?? Neither good number two options but I’m hurting at this position

  7. EJ says:

    Hey Prof,

As my 3rd receiver in a non-ppr league I have Miles Austin, Kenbrell Thompkins, and Justin Blackmon. Do you think it’s worth the risk to drop Austin for Keenan Allen? I feel like Allen has more upside as the season moves on and Austin is an obvious injury risk.

  8. James A says:

They’re ranked higher this week, but would you drop Deandre Hopkins for any of these guys?

    Justin Blackmon
    Kenbrell Thompkins
    Nate Washington
    James Jones

I’m leaning towards Thompkins or Washington, even if just for this week. I’m kind of in panic mode because Hopkins is my ONLY option at flex since I didn’t start Spiller (of course) and everyone else is either injured or on bye.

Turns out that trading Colston for Forte really did hurt my WR depth lol. I’ve clawed my way from 0-2 to 2-2 and need to keep this momentum. I’m still trying to work a trade for Megatron, but I don’t think its going to happen before Sunday.

    • James A says:

Lamar Miller is also available, but I already have too many RB with Peterson, Forte, Spiller, Lacy and S-Jax.

My WRs are Josh Gordon, V-jax, Reggie Wayne, Hopkins.

My problem is I temporarily have three TEs with Gronk wasting space on the bench. I had to pick up Jared Cook to fill-in for Heath Miller’s bye and I didn’t want to drop Miller and risk losing him on waivers in case Gronk continues to sit.

      • James A says:

So basically, drop Hopkins for any of those WRs or Lamar Miller or just see what he can do with Schaub being so erratic lately?

    • I actually prefer Miller as the FLEX, though he’s a bit of a risk, that said, he gives you another long-term option and more RB depth to trade from.

If you wanted it to be a WR, I’d go with James Jones who is probably a little bit of a safer option than Miller.

There’s no one else to drop besides Hopkins? Part of me wouldn’t be against dropping Miller, because Gronkowski and Cook will probably be ranked higher most weeks. Like with Brandon Myers in NY, Pittsburgh may just need to block more than usual, limiting his opportunities.

      • James A says:

I don’t necessarily want it to be a WR, but I have a ton of RBs and trades are hard to come by for some reason.

Amendola is a free-agent in this league. If he’s available tomorrow, I might pick him over all of them. I don’t plan on being able to use him long-term since he always has injury issues, but he might be good for 10 points or so until I can shore up the WR depth a little more.

        • James A says:

I’ve thrown multiple trade offers out there, just to see if anyone will nibble.

          Rivers for Brandon Marshall
Rivers or Spiller for Demaryius Thomas
          Rivers and Spiller for Megatron
          Eddie Lacy for Torrey Smith

We’ll see what happens. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on Amendola since he’s traveling with the team to Cincy, although still questionable.

  9. Jesse says:

Start alshon Jeffrey over Cecil shorts? I have Steve smith, but I know he’s getting Peterson tommorow…thanks

  10. Jesse says:

    Blackmon over Jeffrey then?

  11. Jesse says:

Oh dear god, megatron is out, starting broyles or Kris Durham?
