If you are a fantasy footballer who likes to stream his/her defense, let’s take a look at the best options for the NFL’s second week:
Detroit Lions – at Cleveland
The Browns are going to be forced to throw Brandon Weeden back at QB, and that’s not a good thing. Throw in a questionable running game, at best, and the Browns offense obviously isn’t going to scare you.
The Detroit defense also has potential, despite mediocre numbers thus far. They do have 8 interceptions, and with the Browns likely throwing the ball early and often they should be able to add to that total.
The Lions have also allowed just 5 passing touchdowns, with their real weakness coming against the run (124.6 rushing yards per game, 5 TD). Considering the Browns are likely going to feature Willis McGahee, this matchup looks ripe for the taking.
Minnesota Vikings – vs. Carolina Panthers
The Vikings are coming off their bye week, so you have to hope that they can correct a few of the issues that have plagued them (430.8 yards per game allowed, third most in the league). That said they draw a Panthers team that is averaging 18.5 points per game, despite scoring 38 points against the Giants.
The Panthers have also lost their starting left guard for the season due to a torn ACL, throwing things in a bit of a disarray. It certainly downgrades their line, making running the football and protecting Cam Newton that much more difficult.
The Vikings defense has been decent against the run (104.8 rushing yards per game, 4 TD), which has been the strength of the Panthers offense (seventh best in the league at 137.0 rushing yards per game). It’s a risk, but if the Vikings can stifle the Panthers rushing attack they should have a strong performance.
Buffalo Bills – vs. Cincinnati
Cincinnati has weapons on offense, yet they are averaging just 18.8 points per game. The Bills, meanwhile, have run up 18 sacks and 9 INT over the first five weeks of the season.
Its a tough matchup for the Bills, but one that may be worth rolling the dice on if you are desperate.
