Week 7 Rankings (2013) – Top 50 Wide Receivers

by Will Overton

There seem to be a lot of questionable receivers this week which will make these rankings fluid. Assuming they stay healthy though this could be a nice week for the wideout position, even with the loss of two top 10 guys like Randall Cobb and Julio Jones.

  • Last week we saw a combination of his knee injury and Joe Haden’s coverage keeping Calvin Johnson in check. With the knee still an issue it’s hard to rate Calvin as the number one receiver, especially against a pretty strong secondary in New England. If you own him, you are starting him as long as he’s playing still, but expectations might not be as high as they usually are until this knee issues clears up.
  • Making his debut in the top ten this week is Antonio Brown and this might be a place he gets familiar with. The last three weeks Brown has caught 30 passes in total. While the yardage hasn’t surpassed 100 the last two weeks and he hasn’t caught a TD except in the one game, if he’s catching this many passes and having it thrown to him this many times, good things are going to happen. This is another nice matchup for Brown who will likely approach double digit catches again.
  • Clearly the Jaguars are going to be playing from behind a lot, and clearly they really like throwing the football to Justin Blackmon, likely their most explosive offensive weapon at this point. After a strong debut Blackmon took it an even higher level by catching 14 passes last week 190 yards. This is probably the only time this season he gets targeted 20 times in one game, but it says something about what the Jags want to do and are going to do. Blackmon is a legitimate top 20 wideout.
  • This is a bad week to own Andre Johnson, because he’s in one of those games where you feel like you need to bench him, but then again he’s Andre Johnson. You don’t like him going up against Brandon Flowers and Kansas City and you don’t like him catching passes from T.J. Yates either. Despite the up and down nature of his team he’s been steady with 44 receptions, but he hasn’t scored yet and likely won’t get his first this week.
  • I think it’s time to start taking Keenan Allen seriously. He’s not coming off back to back 100 yard games and has a TD in each of his last two games. He’s also got 20 catches total the last three weeks. The Chargers want to throw the ball, they need to throw the ball, and Allen is their number one receiver. The matchup is favorable, but Allen is probably going to be in the top 30 pretty consistently.
  • We’re going to watch the New England situation closely once again. Danny Amendola went down Sunday and may be out this week. Meanwhile Aaron Dobson ended up being the leading receiver, but once again Kenbrell Thompkins found his way into the end zone right at the end. If Amendola can’t play it affects Julian Edelman most of all as they play such similar roles in the pass game. If I had to choose one guy to use it’d be Thompkins, but the uncertainty makes them all flex plays at best.
  • This is an awfully nice situation for Harry Douglas to find himself in. With Julio Jones out Douglas has been upgraded to starter. Meanwhile, Roddy White is still banged up and if he plays he won’t be playing at 100%, which means Douglas is likely the teams best option this week. On a team who doesn’t have their starting running back and who loves to pass with a good quarterback under center, that’s an enviable spot to be in.
  • It feels like Stpehen Hill is right on the verge of a breakout if Geno Smith can just get him the ball. That feels like a big if though too. On Sunday Hill had a potential big play TD taken when Smith couldn’t hit him while he was open and it probably won’t be the only time that happens. Ideally as the two play more together they can both turn their upside into fantasy relevance, until then it’s hard to use Hill as more than a deep league play or a flex on bye weeks.

  1. James A says:

I need lineup help. I’ve clawed my way from 0-2 to 4-2 and 4th place, mainly by making smart waiver pickups, thanks to this site. 85% of my points last week were from waiver pickups.

Anyways, this week I play a guy that regularly puts up 130+, so I can’t afford to leave points on the bench. Thanks!

    Current line-up:

    QB-Cam Newton
    RB-Adrian Peterson
    RB-Matt Forte
    WR-Reggie Wayne
    WR-Vincent Jackson
    TE-Heath Miller
    Flex-Eddie Lacy
    K-Robbie Gould
    DEF-New England

    Bench:

    Philip Rivers
    Gronk
    Keenan Allen
    Justin Blackmon
    Steven Jackson
    CJ Spiller

As always, I don’t know whether to trust Cam or go with Rivers. They both have good matchups, although St Louis is worrisome after dismantling Houston last week. Overall, it feels like one of those weeks where you want to get cute with your lineup, so help me out here. A loss wouldn’t kill my postseason hopes or anything, but I’d like to keep this win streak going and move up.

    Thanks!

    • It really is a tossup. I would say that Newton has the slightly higher upside with his ability to run for TD (he’s had a rushing TD in two of his past three years). That said, you can go either way there.

That said, your lineup is certainly stacked….lol

      • James A says:

Any suggestions for flex? I’m leaning towards Blackmon, although Lacy is on an upward trend and bound to find the end zone soon, I think. Plus, they’ll need him to keep the passing game open for Rodgers to throw to some new receivers with Cobb and Jones out.

        I hate this game lol.

      • James A says:

Also, I’ve TRIED multiple times to get trades going but this is a VERY casual league and hardly anyone really seems willing to care enough to actually try to trade. They’re content to sit back and wait for their players to produce. I’ve tried twice to get Brees from someone who is 2-4 and even offered Rivers/Spiller/Wayne, but got the “you can’t have him because you want him” response. I told them to enjoy seeing him put up 40 points and still lose because their other RBs are L. Miller and Bryce Brown.

        • I really like Lacey at this point, but tough to sit Blackmon. You’re almost in a no win situation, because you are going to leave points on the bench. That said, I’d actually consider sitting V-Jax

          • James A says:

Whoa now. Elaborate on your thought process.

          • To me the choice is more between Jackson and Lacey. San Diego s actually one f the worst in defending WR and we know Jcksonville is going to try and get Blackmon the ball.

Jackson has a little bit of a bigger battle for the football

      • shiv says:

Wouldnt Rivers be the safer choice. Jags are awful and Rivers is hot especially with Keenan Allen so hes sure to score big. However, Newton’s receivers are not reliable so Rams just have to defend them well. Plus Rams defense is doing better and have a chance to stop Newton. I am a Rivers and Newton owner as well. therefore, Rivers is the better option right?

    • D-marinee says:

I always have that one player that does terrible when I start them and does awesome when I finally bench them. but I’m going to give Newton a start this week also and benching Rg3

  2. Mike W says:

Should I trade Percy Harvin for Greg Jennings?

    • James A says:

Meh, no. If you can afford to keep a PUP guy on the bench, Greg Jennings isn’t going to help you there either. I’d try get more for Harvin if I could.

  3. shiv says:

In 3 WR league. Have Fitzgerald, Nelson, Green, Denarious Moore (bye), and picked up Keenan Allen. Thinking of starting Nelson, Green, and Allen. What do you think?

  4. Romo says:

I have t smith h nicks h Douglas k Allen and a boldin. I have to pick 3. What is ur suggestion??!? I’m thinking about Smith Douglas and Allen?!

  5. D-marinee says:

definitely start allen over Fitzgerald. I have Fitzgerald also and starting josh gordan over him, with Jeffery, and garçon. since cobb went down on me.

  6. Aaron says:

I need some advice on my flex for this week. I am planning on starting Forte and Moreno at RB, and Calvin and Antonio Brown at WR. That leaves me with Alshon Jeffrey, Rice, Heath Miller, and Ellington to put at flex. I’m leaning toward Jeffrey against Washington, but its hard to sit Rice given what he’s capable of. Granted, he’s been inconsistent and is facing Pitt. Thoughts?

  7. Rico says:

    What up Roto,
You said it well not sure about starting Andre Johnson vs KC(which is also my D) should I bench him and go with Golden Tate who has been getting a lot of targets vs cardinals or play Johnson and hope the only player that burns my D (KC) will still give me points on the other end. Thxs

  8. Mike W – Unless you absolutely need the WR, I’d prefer to sit on Harvin

shic – Absolutely, you can’t trust Fitzgerald for this week

Romo – I think Smith/Allen are the locks. The third one is either Nicks or Douglas, which I’d lean towards Douglas by a hair

Aaron – I’d go with Rice personally, especially since it’s not like Jeffery is a lock to produce

Rico – I couldn’t trust Tate (or any Seattle receiver). They are just too unstable at this point.

  9. Rico says:

Ok cool, how about Hartline vs buffalo?

  10. Jesse says:

Got a tough one, pick 3 Antonio brown, Dez, Demaryus Thomas, or Justin blackmon? Non-ppr

  11. Jesse says:

Also, i got a trade offer knowshon for brees straight up. I have Brady, but that would leave me with lacy, spiller, and zac Stacy. I’m not sure I wanna do it, what do you think?

    • James A says:

As in getting Brees for Moreno?

The sticking point here is Spiller. If he ever gets the chance to produce like we know he is capable, then this is an awesome trade. If he keeps middling around like he has been, then this becomes a meh trade overall. While Brady hasn’t been a fantasy superstar and Brees has, RBs are so hard to come by, especially a Top 5 guy like Moreno who has thoroughly squashed any attempt at a RBBC in Denver.

Lots of risk, lots of upside.

  12. Nate says:

I have Vincent Jackson, Cruz, and Decker currently starting as WR1, WR2 and Flex. I was thinking that if James Jones is healthy that he’ll be better in my flex rather than Decker. So I’m keeping an eye open. Also my RB1 and RB2 are Martin and Rice whereas I have FJax on the bench. My RBs have been an absolute disappointment though, which is why I’m starting WRs in the flex. Thoughts?

  13. Rico – I would be more apt to make that gamble if I was set on sitting Johnson (though I may roll the dice on him depending on the news)

Jesse – I would leave Brown on the bench; as for the trade, it does leave you thin at RB but do you think you could flip Brady for another RB? As it is Moreno is no lock to produce all season long….

Nate – sounds about right, though with your options I may play it safe and leave Jones on the bench. Even if he plays, will he be 100%?

  14. Thien says:

Non PPR: I start Dez Bryant, Jordy Nelson, Josh Gordon and sit Reggie Wayne this week; but
GB lost Cobb so Joe Harden will take a good care of Jordy.
Should i sit him and start Reggie Wayne? Thanks

  15. Eric H says:

What are your thoughts on Andre Johnson? I’m relatively set at WR(Gordon and Jordy are my other WR’s) but the QB and TD situation has me pretty concerned.

  16. Jesse says:

I just think once gronk is playing, Brady is gonna step back into the top 5 category. Then the trade would really be pointless, I just don’t trust spiller, kinda hoping Stacy keeps getting better and gets some td’s so I can have some further options

  17. James A says:

I have Luck and Rivers in one league. Problem? Both are on bye in Week 8. Oops! I picked up Josh Freeman off waivers, but now I have to decide which one gets traded since I have other more pressing needs.

    My roster:

    Phillip Rivers
    Andrew Luck
    Josh Freeman
    Knowshon Moreno
    Matt Forte
    MJD
    Willis McGahee
    Reggie Wayne
    Vincent Jackson
    Josh Gordon
    Percy Harvin
    Jordan Cameron
    Greg Olsen

I see one guy with only one QB (and its Eli) who also has Ray Rice, Brandon Jacobs, Pierre Garcon and Antonio Brown.

I can’t decide if my biggest need is RB or WR.

Is Luck for Rice a good value? Rice has had his issues this year, but a RB1 is a RB1.

    • Eric H says:

I would pull the trigger on Luck for Rice immediately. I would also try and trade Rice based on name recognition, but even if you don’t flip him you’re way ahead of the game.

  18. Jesse says:

Ok if I can get this guy to accept my trade, then ill go for the brees-Moreno one. Tryin to give up d-Thomas and spiller for forte. If he accepts, ill accept the other trade and ill have Brees, Antonio brown, Dez, Blackmon, Forte, lacy, j-Finley, and Seattle’s defense! Well see what happens

  19. Jesse says:

No ill have Lamar miller on the bench, which hopefully those idiots in Miami will realize they need to give ALL the carries to him and not Thomas. Those are just my starting players

  20. Mike says:

I want to start jordy but haden is a blanket out there so it worries me. Should I bench him and choose between v.jackson and blackmon

  21. Thien – I’d say it was a toss up between those two. I’d lean Wayne given the matchup, though.

Eric H – I would sit Johnson this week for the reasons you stated, but the potential and upside are still there long term

James A – I would agree, Rice still has the upside of a top RB so if you can get him for a player you don’t need it’s a big win

Jesse – That may be a tad bit much for Forte. I would rather keep Spiller and, if you are set on trading Demaryius Thomas, I’d go and get a RB 1-for-1. That sad, your lineup would be extremely nice, so can’t complain!

  22. Bryon Jones says:

I am wondering if I should put Vincent Jackson or Eddy Lacy at the flex this week. Vincent is predicted to have a big game, but with so many receivers hurt in GB, I would think Eddy would get a hefty load. What does everybody think? my lineup is set currently as:
    QB:Philip Rivers
    RB:LeSean McCoy
    RB: Knowshon Moreno
    WR:Dez Bryant
    WR:Justin Blackmon
    TE:Antonio Gates
    Flex:Vincent Jackson
    K:Nick Novak
    Def:KC
    Bench
Matt Stafford, Eddy Lacy, T.Y.Hilton, Stevan Ridley, Greg Olson, Tennessee Defense

  23. Mike says:

Also who’s a good pick up if jones can’t go for the packers

  24. Allen says:

nice to come across this website!!

I have some questions about week 7.

Ive been using Eric Decker in my flex spot since the start of the season. (12 man league)

Should I start Decker or Harry Douglas this week?

  25. Jesse says:

The problem is I have 3 players blackmon, d-thomas, and moreno on bye at the same time. So I really need to get rid of 1 of the 3 or I will be screwed that week. I can’t afford to drop 3 players to replace them for 1 game.

  26. Bryan Jones – Lacey/Jackson is an absolute coinflip, but when it’s close I always lean towards the RB. I’d go with Lacey.

Mike – That’s pretty open ended. Any idea as to who’s available?

Allen – Welcome to the party! Douglas is still a bit of a risk, as they could easily feature Tony Gonzalez (as they’ve discussed). Decker probably has the higher upside, so I’d lean on him.

Jesse – Gotcha, makes a little bit more sense then.

  27. Mr.T says:

Need a WR and a flex:

    Jennings, Rueben Randall, Edelman

    Jaquizz Rogers, CJ

Really torn on this. I think Randall could put up some numbers, and Jennings is so up and down. Any advice?

    • WR – I don’t trust Jennings, though Freeman being at QB does help. With all the news of Randall being the source of a lot of the INT for Eli and the team potentially showcasing Nicks, I actually think I’d lean that way

FLEX – Randle. I just don’t trust either of your RB and Edelman is just as risky at this point

  28. Jesse says:

Okay I have a trade working now D-Thomas n lacy for Brees n mike Wallace..I know I know, mike Wallace sucks but I’m getting brees, and I’m flipping Brady for givanni Bernard….that puts my starters at Brees, Dez, Antonio Brown, Blackmon, Moreno, Giovanni Bernard, J-Finley, and I still have Spiller, and Lamar miller on the bench

  29. Jesse says:

Plus the guy I’m trading with is 0-6 so its not like hes my competition

  30. James A says:

My Luck for Rice trade was firmly rejected with “I don’t need another floundering QB”. Actually, he does because he only has Eli. So, I threw MJD in with the trade because I don’t use him (and I also pointed out that MJD has actually outscored Rice in our PPR league thus far). We’ll see if he makes the smart move.

  31. Steve says:

Vincent Jackson and Pierre garçon are my starting wide receivers..who should I flex..Andre Johnson or Keenan Allen?

  32. Randy says:

Last week I benched Fitzgerald b/c he was up against a tough defense and the bad hammy so of course he had a good day. This week, same thing. I’m also starting Garcon and Demaryius Thomas at WR. My other options are Jennings, Steve Smith or Lafell. Do I still start Fitz and cross my fingers? PPR league.

  33. steven says:

Can start 3. I have dez bryant, justin blackmon, jordy nelson, hakeem nicks, and antonio brown.

  34. Andrew H says:

Hey roto I need a wr and a flex between Greg jennings Julian Edelman harry Douglas and chris Johnson thx

  35. Mr.T says:

    Rotoprof,

Had a trade fall through. So looking for 3 out of.

Hilton, Wallace, Edleman, Jennings, and Reuben Randle.

Also have CJ and Jaquizz as a possible flex, but don’t like their match-ups

I like Randall and Hilton in their match-ups, and am leaning wallace. Just wanted to see if you had a little advice.

    • Ray Kuhn says:

Yeah, I probably go Hilton and Wallace for sure. Wallace and Tannehill are starting to get chemistry going, plus the bye week likely helped.

With the 3rd spot, I’d be between Edelman and Randle. Randle does have a good matchup, and Eli has been looking to him a ton, but he also has made some mistakes costing Manning some picks. PPR-Edelman, Standard-Randle

  36. Adam says:

I was offered Fitzgerald for my Joique Bell and Percy Harvin. Do you think I’m getting a good deal? And do you think Fitz will be better than Harvin once Havin comes back the rest of the season?

  37. Edwardjames734 says:

Keenan Allen should be started in all leagues v-jax however no…. But I have a question should I pick up brown the gmens RB that is on short term IR and stash him with them have Jacobs and Hillis is he worth the stash like it says?
