Draft Prospect To Watch: Is Brandin Cooks A Surefire Fantasy Asset?

by Eric Stashin (aka The Rotoprofessor)

While he’s listed at 5’10″ and 185 pounds, Lindsay Schnell of Oregonian Live (click here for the article) used the word “generous” to describe that listing. That said, there’s no questioning the talent of the Oregon State sophomore who won the Biletnikoff Award this season as the best receiver in college football.

The final numbers were certainly eye popping:

  • 128 receptions
  • 1,730 yards
  • 16 TD

In fact the only game he failed to reach 80 yards was in his final one, when he picked up 8 receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.  The size is obviously going to be concerning, but if you have the ability to make plays you are going to have value for fantasy owners and NFL franchises.

According to Walter Football, Cooks certainly helped himself at the Combine:

“He blazed a fast 40 with an official time of 4.33 and a 10-yard split of 1.51. Cooks had a drop in the gauntlet, but also displayed some nice hands. In the field work, his route-running was impressive, as he showed feet and agility.”

According to Mike Huguenin of NFL.com (click here for the article), Cooks’ 40 time was the fastest among wide receivers at the combine. There also has a comment from Mike Maycock of NFL Network saying:

“This kid’s special with the ball in his hands”

There is now speculation that he could sneak into the end of the first round, and there are definitely teams looking for potential play makers. Would he be a fit as a slot man in San Francisco? What about in New England, where they clearly need weapons (though they could be looking at bigger receivers/tight ends)? Kansas City certainly is in need of someone who can make something happen with the ball in his hands.  How about Carolina, who is on the lookout for a second receiver?

Where he lands is going to ultimately determine his potential value, but he definitely has put himself on the map as a player to watch.
