We have to give Marques Colston credit, he has been consistent in his production:
- He’s only had one season with fewer than 70 receptions (47 in 2008, but that came in just 11 games)
- Last season was the second time he came up short of 1,000 yards (the first was the same shortened 2008)
- Last season was also the second time he had fewer than 7 TD (2008 was the other once again).
In 15 games he managed 75 catches for 943 yards and 5 TD, not terrible numbers at all. Considering the offense he plays in, with Drew Brees at the helm, it’s easy to expect a rebound season… Maybe not, though.
We have to remember that he is now 31 years old and has consistently been forced to miss a handful of games each year (in the past four seasons the only time he played a full 16 was in 2012). Just how much longer can we expect him to produce at his current levels?
You also have to wonder how the young talent around him could respond. While first round wide receivers are generally hard to trust in Year 1, you have to think that Brandin Cooks is going to play a role in the offense. You have have Kenny Stills, who we’ve already discussed as a potential breakout receiver, and Jimmy Graham officially back in the mix.
As it is the Saints generally spread the ball around, it’s just increasingly more likely that a few of those targets start moving away from Colston.
Our 2014 Projection:
70 receptions, 900 yards, 6 TD
Those are viable numbers, but they are more of a depth option as opposed to a player to draft as a WR3. Of course, his current ADP (84.3) means that you’d need to select him as a starter on your team.
There’s simply too much risk for that. Being drafted after him are guys like Mike Wallace, Terrance Williams and Emmanuel Sanders, all of which bring significantly more upside potential with them.
